Growing old with Hip Hop

I wrote this piece back in 2013, and in light of hip hop’s 50th anniversary celebration this weekend, I believe this poem resonates fittingly. Enjoy! Born with this music Hip hop Fatherless soul Hip hop was my guide It showed me the breaks Which I lived Auditory No videos and magazines Well, there was……. Underground Suppressed like the segregated south Trying to gain musical civil rights Breakthrough Run DMC Elementary Rhymes Which to this day, are parts of me Still there was no money I learned the meaning of philosophy Through BDP When dancing earned respect And DJ’s didn’t yell there names Promoting themselves the whole night Stopping the violence Was a mission Fashion was…. Gold Suede Leather Bombers Sheep skins And FOR REAL Most of us fought Hand to hand As I age Hip hop I still breathe I lived through the changes Its common sense I think I love her Well??? It’s a love hate thing Cause I love the music But I hate the game Sex and violence Yeah Kris knew it The art form is gone Hip hop Now has the root of all evil It all about the Benjamin’s And the Benz The ice The,...

Perception Shift

Perception Shift I was having quite a day! Allow me to elaborate. On my way to North Carolina to visit my father and sister, whom I haven’t seen and haven’t been on good terms with, I encountered a problem. As I walked away from the car, I realized I didn’t have my phone. I distinctly remembered leaving it in the car, so it must have slipped out of my pocket and been picked up by a bystander who took it along. I tracked it to New York, then New Jersey, and down the coast. I gathered my old phone and prepared for my journey. I even changed my flight and ended up with a window seat, which I rarely choose. Things seemed to be going well until a taller gentleman was in the aisle seat when I arrived, leaving me with the window seat. But wait, could my luck improve further? It did when the middle seat remained vacant! Then, a cheerful, larger man arrived, and he pointed to the seat. In my head, I thought, “WTF.” He was smiling and appeared to be the happiest middle-aged man on the plane. As he struggled to get situated in his seat,,...

Imagine this!!!!

Last week, I posted a picture that unfortunately contained misinformation. My intention was to present a challenging question, not to take a side on the issue. This sparked a heated discussion among people on both sides. Long story short, I was wrong for posting it, and when someone asked me to take it down, I did so immediately and offered an apology. I apologized for two main reasons. First, I recognized that posting misleading information was not appropriate, and my intention was never to offend anyone. Second, I needed to take responsibility for my actions and move forward. Admitting my mistake and apologizing is a sign of humanity and humility. It shows that we are capable of growth through acknowledging our errors. Imagine this… Donald Trump emerging in Minneapolis, Minnesota shortly after George Floyd was killed, addressing the nation, and saying something like this: “Americans, our system has failed us once again.” He then lists the names of several Black men and other individuals of different races who were killed by the police under seemingly unjust circumstances. He provides the total number of such deaths during his presidency, apologizes to the community for their suffering, offers resources to support them,,...

51 years old

As another year swiftly comes to an end, I find myself on the brink of turning 51. Reflecting on my journey, I feel immensely blessed to have reached this point. In my teenage years, the specter of violence loomed large due to the crack epidemic, leaving me anxious about a potentially tragic end. Amidst the drugs and crime, thoughts of mortality were a frequent companion, a topic seldom shared with others. Upon reaching 21, I found myself in college, surprised and without a concrete plan for the future. Living day by day, immersed in a cycle of indulgence, I failed to realize my potential and inadvertently hurt those around me. Graduating at 24, I was an adult with little self-understanding and no clear path forward, questioning the worth of my existence. Fatherhood thrust itself upon me in 1998, although I had unknowingly been a father since 1996. As a young father, I stumbled through, making numerous mistakes and offering excuses for my shortcomings. Despite building a career and enjoying social success, my relationship with my children suffered, and I reached 2010 with a familial disconnect. A pivotal decision marked a turning point in my life. I chose to relinquish blame,,...

Past Present Future

Where do you reside in the vast expanse of time? Are you lost in the tumultuous waters of past mistakes, struggling against the currents of regret? Or perhaps you find yourself casting your gaze forward, envisioning a future filled with triumphs in finance, society, and athleticism. Yet, there’s another realm – the present moment – where tranquility awaits. Do you recognize where you stand? Are you aware of how the ghosts of your past transgressions may be undermining your future? It’s plausible that you’re so fixated on the horizon that you fail to seize the opportunities unfolding in the now. Or maybe you’re fully immersed in the present, leveraging past setbacks as stepping stones, trusting the process to create a path toward the future of your dreams. Welcome to the matrix of existence, where the echoes of yesteryears reverberate through our present, while we strive to chart a course for the tomorrows yet to unfold. My journey through life has been a tapestry woven with invaluable lessons, each accompanied by its own scar – some fading with time, while others lingered long after the wounds had ostensibly healed. Despite the passage of time, the shadows of my darkest moments remained,...
