Do we often quit what we start? Do we fail more than we quit? Is quitting the same as failure? Why do we quit? Is failure a part of the process? These are questions I’ve been asking myself over the last several decades. Over the past ten years, I haven’t quit anything. While some relationships didn’t work out, I didn’t quit; rather, we simply weren’t compatible. Beyond those relationships, I continue to work towards several goals. I haven’t failed, even though I’m not yet where I want to be. Take a moment to evaluate yourself. I typically set a goal and outline a few objectives to help me achieve it. One goal I started working on about a year and a half ago is to have a million dollars in cash or in the bank or a brokerage account by age 55. My retirement accounts don’t count towards this goal. I began this journey on January 11, 2023, my 50th birthday, with zero savings. I was buying a new home with a mortgage, despite not having a mortgage for the previous two years. Lesson’s vs. The belt

As a 70’s baby, I was brought up by the belt. The belt was the lesson and fear was the motivation. Any questions that raised me were responded to with “because I said so!” Does this quote sound familiar? Growing up, that was the way things were done. As a father, I proudly say I never spanked my kids. I yelled at them, sure, and got frustrated at times, but I never used the same methods that were applied to me. I’m not saying that parents who spanked their kids weren’t good parents—sometimes, that was just the way of the world back then. However, as times change, so too must the methods we use to raise and guide our children. Now, as an educator who has been working with kids for over 25 years, I can see we are living in a time of transition—one that has become increasingly complicated. Parents, in many ways, have lost control over their children, especially with the internet and the larger social infrastructure shaping our kids’ lives. Lost and Found: A Wallet, A Cop, and A Lesson in Kindness

It was a typical December Monday night, and my younger cousin and I had decided to catch Taka at the Parkade Movie Theater in Manchester, Connecticut. The film was incredible—AI has gotten so good, I half expected Simba to leap off the screen and grab my popcorn. Speaking of popcorn, I devoured two large bags (yes, two) and chased them down with water I smuggled in like a seasoned pro. I’m sorry, but I’m not paying $5 for a bottle of water worth a quarter. The movie ended, and we made our way to the car. That’s when I realized something was off—my wallet wasn’t in my pocket. Panic set in. We rushed back inside, retraced every step, and even dove headfirst into the garbage cans like we were on a scavenger hunt for the world’s most important treasure. The theater staff were helpful, but no luck. I was convinced someone had found the wallet, pocketed the cash, and dumped the rest. Graduation 🧑‍🎓

This weekend, I had the honor of attending my niece’s graduation from Coastal Carolina University. As I sat among the sea of caps and gowns, witnessing the hopeful faces of tomorrow, I couldn’t help but reminisce about my own college graduation back in the halcyon days of 1997. Graduation day had stirred within me a whirlwind of emotions; I was filled with a mix of excitement and trepidation as I faced the looming prospect of adulthood. Reflecting on my collegiate journey, I realized that I hadn’t been the quintessential college student. With a modest GPA of 2.2, I often wondered how I managed to cross the finish line. Yet, here I was, a testament to the 30% of individuals who had earned a college degree. Surveying the room, I pondered how many of my fellow graduates shared a similar path. As the ceremony unfolded, I couldn’t shake the feeling of empathy for these fresh-faced graduates.
