Preparation is a must!

Preparation lays the foundation for success. As a former basketball coach, I dedicated countless hours to preparing for each game. This involved various tasks such as scouting the opposing team, analyzing game footage, and conducting daily practices with my team. We always felt ready to face teams that were equal to or better than us, but we often found ourselves unprepared against less skilled opponents. As I grew in my coaching journey, I came to realize that sometimes, prioritizing the team’s well-being necessitates sacrificing the potential for a resounding victory. Early in my coaching career, my sole focus was on winning and winning by a wide margin. If we were significantly superior to an opposing team, I wanted to outscore them by a significant margin. However, a pivotal moment occurred that altered my coaching philosophy. Interestingly, it wasn’t related to basketball at all. A concerned parent approached me seeking guidance regarding her son. She explained that her son consistently arrived late to school unless she personally woke him up and supervised his morning routine. Despite being a talented basketball player, his habit of tardiness was putting his place on the team in jeopardy. Determined to help, I agreed to speak,...

Monkey see, monkey do!

When I was a kid the adults would use the phrase “monkey see monkey do”. On the surface I understood what they meant in saying this. I did not comprehend the importance of what I was seeing, listening to, and following. The phrase was often used when I followed a bad behavior or tried to do something that an adult did. I grew up around people who smoked. When I was a kid they used to sell gum that looked like cigarettes. I loved that gum because I could buy it, blow a cloud of smoke and get some candy out of it too. Thinking back, it was a brilliant marketing scheme for cigarette companies: make it cool to smoke. A product that kids can buy that makes them cool. When they become adults, they will be smoking or want to smoke. Monkey see monkey do. Reflecting on my life, I notice how the phrase monkey see monkey do has impacted me during various stages in multiple ways. My dad loved basketball, although I never saw him play or remember if I did. I played basketball. I learned how to play mostly by watching games on television, then going to,...

Your super hero is within YOU!

Personal excellence is the ultimate rebellion! Become the best version of yourself. Stop wasting your time finding excuses for why you aren’t where you want to be in life. I blame me. Who do you blame? We live in a world, especially in the USA, where we depend so much on others. We depend on electricity, running water, grocery stores, and hundreds of other dependent variables that have been created over time. We are so dependent on these elements of life that we think we cannot survive without them. A few years ago, one of my student’s parents told me that her child needed to bring his phone to school because it was the only way she could contact him if she needed him. I was speechless. She was correct in her mind about needing to contact her son. The school does have a phone system, and if her child was supposed to be in school and she needed to contact him, she could call the school. However, technology has created a more convenient system, and society has forgotten how to function without it. I graduated from high school and college without a cell phone. Now, the opposite is true.,...

Shades of a Man (Podcast)

For those who’ve been following my journey, reading my blogs, sharing my words, reflecting with me—I want to say thank you. Your presence matters. Your support matters. But lately, I know you’ve noticed: I haven’t been blogging every week like I used to. That’s not because I stopped growing, or because I’ve run out of things to say. Quite the opposite. I’ve been doing deep work. I’ve been working on myself—the man I am and the man I’m becoming. Spiritually. Emotionally. Physically. I’ve been facing the mirror not just to look, but to see. And in that seeing, I’ve been peeling back layers… confronting old habits, past wounds, and truths I once ran from. I’ve been working on being a better father. A better friend. A better man of God. Not perfect—but present. At the same time, I’ve been working on something that’s lived inside me since I was a kid. Shades of a Man. It’s my poetry. It’s my story. It’s my shadow and my sunlight. I started writing when I was eight years old. Back then, it was just a way to cope, to create, to breathe. Now, it’s become something greater. A reflection of every chapter—young boy,,...

My circle, The power of the Mat!

As I stood on the mat, rooted yet weightless amidst the palpable energy, my mind embarked on a journey. Nine men, all of color on this particular day, were poised to enter tranquility alongside me. I am both a student and a teacher of yoga, still navigating the novice levels, yet to some in the group, I appeared as an expert. Our class unfolds in segments, each spanning 10-15 minutes, with every yogi taking their turn to lead. Each individual possesses a unique profundity that imbues the room with a radiant energy that inspires. As I awaited my turn, I glanced around the room, struck by the remarkable men surrounding me. Three were newly acquainted, their introductions exuding an aura that instantly captured my attention. One regards me as a mentor, young enough to be my son. Two others have been constants in my life for nearly three decades. And then there’s the man I fondly call “the tree,” a figure whispered about in mutual circles for over a decade, whose recent collaboration with me brought immense joy. In that moment, I was in awe, elevated by the sheer magnificence of the company I kept. Taking a deep breath, I,...
