Over the past decade, my philosophy on life and success has undergone a profound transformation. I used to fluctuate between easily being motivated and unmotivated. I often pointed fingers at external circumstances beyond my control for my situation, consistently shifting blame away from myself. However, a single, simple adjustment altered the course of my life. I decided to take full responsibility for my actions, and this shift, which took approximately 22 years of my adult life, significantly changed my perspective on the world and the results I achieved in my physical, mental, and financial endeavors. Looking back on my younger self, I can’t help but chuckle. I see so many individuals exhibiting similar traits. They frequently settle for less, clutching onto meager resources and unrealistic dreams, hoping for a superhero to swoop in and save the day. But the truth is, no superhero is coming to your rescue, divine intervention won’t do it for you, your significant other can’t do it either, and your idol won’t magically appear to help you reach your desired destination. Independent Thinker

I was born into a left family, surrounded by the Democratic Party. Without truly understanding their values, I was told the Republican Party was racist, which influenced my support for the Democrats for almost two decades as a young adult. Meeting Republicans made me question my assumptions, realizing I hadn’t truly seen them as individuals. I lacked education about both parties and blindly followed Democratic volunteers’ advice at the voting booth ( they would tell you as you where going to vote to vote rows). The turning point came in 2008 when Obama was elected; I felt disconnected from both parties. I’m not an old school liberal or anti-government; I simply refuse to support what I disagree with based solely on party affiliation. Too much focus lies on parties, not candidates. I believe that if Trump were a Democrat or Biden a Republican, many within those parties would NOT switch allegiances. They would supporT “ THEIR” party! Political parties often overshadow candidate qualities good, bad or indifferent. I’m neither right nor left; I’m ambidextrous politically. Birthday wish #52

A few weeks ago I proudly made it to age 52. Birthdays have always been a reflective time for me, a moment to pause and take stock of where I’ve been, where I am, and where I’m heading. At 52 years old, my birthday wishes no longer resemble the ones I made as a child or even as a young man. The things I used to dream about seem like echoes of a different person—a person who didn’t yet understand the weight and beauty of self-discovery. Now, my wishes have evolved into something deeper, something more profound: I wish for me to be the best version of myself. When I was a kid, my birthday wishes were simple and sweet. I’d blow out the candles on my cake, grinning from ear to ear, and hope for the latest toys that caught my eye. Action figures, bikes, and the like were treasures that lit up my world. Court house

Walking into the courthouse in 2025 took me way back, way back to a time when my name echoed in these halls too often, when court dates were as routine as paydays, and I was always waiting on a verdict that never truly freed me. I could still feel the weight of those years pressing against my chest like a judge’s gavel slamming down on a fate I couldn’t control. Outside, the familiar sight of hurried last drags on cigarettes painted the same picture of desperation I once knew too well. The nicotine-filled exhales mixed with the cold morning air, swirling like the uncertainty in the eyes of the people waiting to step inside. Some of them laughed, not because life was funny, but because pain sometimes only has two options—tears or laughter. Others sat still, haunted by the unknown, their hands fidgeting with paper summonses or last-minute phone calls to people who couldn’t save them from what was coming. Life’s road map!

If you’re under 35, chances are you’ve never had to unfold a map to chart your course on a road trip or relied on verbal directions from a friend. Instead, you’ve likely been fortunate enough to have GPS at your fingertips. But does this modern convenience truly make our journeys easier, or does it rob us of the valuable lessons learned through getting lost? I remember the days of navigating across states armed only with a map and sheer determination. Yes, I got lost countless times, like that memorable trip with my friend Mike back in the early ’90s. We ended up heading in the wrong direction for hours before a kind stranger set us straight. What should have been a six-hour journey turned into a 12-hour odyssey, but looking back, it’s an experience that bonded us for life. Reflecting on my life’s journey, I see parallels with the roads I’ve traveled. Each trip, whether literal or metaphorical, has taught me valuable lessons along the way.
