Unlike award shows, concerts, or political debates, where viewership is divided, the Super Bowl brings America together for a single moment, a rare instance where we all witness the same thing simultaneously. This is why the halftime performance matters so much. It’s not just entertainment; it’s a statement. In 2004, Puff Daddy—now better known as Diddy—or prison number performed at the Super Bowl alongside Nelly, Kid Rock, and Janet Jackson. The Plastic Spoon!

I know all about being born with a plastic spoon. A plastic spoon might be found in the trash because it’s meant for one-time use only. Being born with a plastic spoon means one starts life at the bottom. One may have hard working parents who serve as good role models and provide what’s needed. However, when they pass away, they may not leave behind much except debt. Saying I was born with a plastic spoon isn’t a knock on my parents; it’s just the truth. I was born poor, with parents who were socially and economically uneducated. The likelihood of me graduating from college and earning a degree was extremely low. Yet, I earned a master’s degree and beyond, defining what hard work and determination are. My plastic spoon was fortunately handed to me in the 70s, before cell phones and computers became common items. I didn’t even realize I was poor or different until I moved to Greenwich, CT, from the Bronx in 5th grade. Lost and Found: A Wallet, A Cop, and A Lesson in Kindness

It was a typical December Monday night, and my younger cousin and I had decided to catch Taka at the Parkade Movie Theater in Manchester, Connecticut. The film was incredible—AI has gotten so good, I half expected Simba to leap off the screen and grab my popcorn. Speaking of popcorn, I devoured two large bags (yes, two) and chased them down with water I smuggled in like a seasoned pro. I’m sorry, but I’m not paying $5 for a bottle of water worth a quarter. The movie ended, and we made our way to the car. That’s when I realized something was off—my wallet wasn’t in my pocket. Panic set in. We rushed back inside, retraced every step, and even dove headfirst into the garbage cans like we were on a scavenger hunt for the world’s most important treasure. The theater staff were helpful, but no luck. I was convinced someone had found the wallet, pocketed the cash, and dumped the rest. Life’s road map!

If you’re under 35, chances are you’ve never had to unfold a map to chart your course on a road trip or relied on verbal directions from a friend. Instead, you’ve likely been fortunate enough to have GPS at your fingertips. But does this modern convenience truly make our journeys easier, or does it rob us of the valuable lessons learned through getting lost? I remember the days of navigating across states armed only with a map and sheer determination. Yes, I got lost countless times, like that memorable trip with my friend Mike back in the early ’90s. We ended up heading in the wrong direction for hours before a kind stranger set us straight. What should have been a six-hour journey turned into a 12-hour odyssey, but looking back, it’s an experience that bonded us for life. Reflecting on my life’s journey, I see parallels with the roads I’ve traveled. Each trip, whether literal or metaphorical, has taught me valuable lessons along the way. As the new year unfolds, countless individuals find themselves inspired to make positive changes. Weight loss, quitting smoking or drinking, spending more time with family, and increasing income are among the common aspirations. Achieving these goals is entirely possible, yet a significant majority, around 80% or more, abandon their resolutions within the initial weeks of the year. Reflecting on my past New Year’s resolutions, I aimed to quit smoking on seven different occasions. Despite temporary successes, lasting up to three months each time, and two instances of abstaining for over a year within a span of 13 years, my final and successful quit happened on a random day in 2009. It’s worth noting that I had started making lifestyle changes well before completely overcoming the habit. Your actions shape who you become. Consistent effort leads to improvement. It’s crucial to emphasize that many individuals desire rewards without investing the necessary work. Excuses surface when expectations are unmet, and self-blame is avoided. Want a 6-figure career? Cultivate a 7-figure work ethic. Dreaming of a 7-figure home? Craft an 8-figure game plan. Dreaming alone won’t suffice; it’s essential to start living the dream by taking actionable steps.
