Racist or Not?

When I moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, from the Bronx, New York, in the early to mid-80s, the world was vastly different. I listened to music on a record player and cassette deck, wrote letters to friends outside of my local calling area, and adhered to the belief that children should be seen and not heard, at least in my family’s eyes. I rarely interacted with people who were not Black or Hispanic, unless it was at school or in a store. Greenwich was unlike any other place I had been. Fortunately, I lived near one of the three projects in Greenwich, in a predominantly Italian neighborhood. Interestingly, I recently discovered that I have a significant amount of Italian ancestry in my DNA. I still remember the trepidation I felt on my first day exploring the neighborhood. I started school in the fifth grade and immediately felt like an outcast. The cultural differences were challenging, and children can be cruel. I got into several fights within the first few months and shut down academically. The situation was further complicated by my parents’ separation during this transition. I was deemed not ready for fifth grade and was held back to the fourth,...

The GREAT debate-NOT

The 2024 presidential election has presented us with perhaps the most disheartening choice in modern American politics: Kamala Harris versus Donald Trump. On one side, we have a candidate often portrayed as a puppet, reminiscent of “The Manchurian Candidate,” with scripted responses, a questionable grasp of leadership, and an allegiance to establishment politics that often seems more performative than purposeful. On the other, Donald Trump—a real-life Archie Bunker figure, whose crude rhetoric, divisive policies, and disregard for decorum and truth have turned the political arena into a reality show more concerned with ratings than results. Did it matter? No, because the game was rigged from the start. The left stays left, the right stays right, and America stays stuck. The line between politics and entertainment has blurred to the point of being indistinguishable. Candidates are no longer elected on merit or vision but on who can rally their base into a frenzy, often through fear, misinformation, or nostalgia for a past that never really existed. This election isn’t about policy; it’s about power plays, media spectacles, and maintaining the status quo. Both candidates embody the worst aspects of American politics: one pandering to progressive optics without substance, the other stoking,...

Mr. K

This blog is a great follow up to Ham Ave. When I first moved to Greenwich I was completely new to organized sports. The only games I knew were kick ball, stick ball, taps and tag. I watched baseball, football and basketball all the time. I just never had the opportunity to play sports in an organized or even unorganized setting. Living in the city and spending a lot of time in the projects didn’t allow for these opportunities for me prior to moving to Greenwich. Being outside and playing as a kid allowed me to transition to organized sports well. I went to Hamilton Avenue Elementary school. I was not a fan of the learning part in school. The change from the Mount Vernon/ Bronx New York to Greenwich Ct really halted my education. The Bronx and Mount Vernon areas I lived in were predominantly black. I didn’t even know too many people of Spanish descent. Greenwich on the other hand was white, and the neighborhood I lived in was mostly Italian. I went from being called a white boy to being seen as black. I was extremely uncomfortable and the only way I knew how to deal with,...
