Election Day!

As I pulled up to the polls at Kenney Elementary School in Manchester, Connecticut, I couldn’t help but reflect on the first time I ever voted back in 1992. I was young, born a Democrat, casting my vote for Bill Clinton without much thought. Back then, voting felt straightforward, a quick alignment with what I’d always known. But this time, over 32 years later, I felt something entirely different. I felt the weight of responsibility, yes, but also a deep questioning of the act itself—a reflection on whether voting, as it stands, truly aligns with my values. Time has taught me more about life, about this country, and about the principles that should ground our society. My experiences as a Black man, an independent thinker, and a father have reshaped how I see my place here and the responsibility I bear. Today, when I vote, I don’t do it out of habit but from a conscious sense of duty. Yet I can’t help but wonder if casting my vote is, in part, an acceptance of a system that no longer if ever seems to serve us all. Avoidence

Avoidance was the primary reason for my mediocre performance during my college and early adult years. I was a master of procrastination. I even avoided acknowledging uncomfortable truths about myself and missed countless opportunities for self-improvement. Take a moment to think about the things you currently avoid. Without even knowing you, I can predict that many of the things you avoid are precisely those that could catalyze your growth and enhance your life. Now, some of you, the fellow master avoiders reading this, might say things like, “I avoid my ex because they are toxic,” or “I avoid public places because of the violence.” To that, I can only say: you are not ready to become the best version of yourself because you are still finding excuses to avoid situations. PERIOD! In my experience, I avoided challenges that seemed daunting and confronting my fears. But facing your fears is the best way to live! One of my biggest fears during college was not being good enough to play basketball at the collegiate level. Everyone around me had immense confidence that I would excel in collegiate basketball. Listening to my grandfather’s captivating stories, I found myself yearning to experience the vivid world of his childhood. It was an era influenced by the KKK and the challenging lifestyle of sharecropping, yet my grandfather’s stories also incorporated the wonders of television and technological gadgets from the 70s, 80s, and 90s—elements he himself lived without. As a child, one of the most enlightening questions I asked him was about the impact of the Great Depression on his life. His response was simple: he didn’t realize there was an economic crisis at the time. While money held some importance, his family valued land and livestock even more. He explained that they could go days, even weeks, without spending any money. Survival meant planting and slaughtering their own food, cutting down trees for heating and cooking, and not even contemplating the luxury of air conditioning. Money was reserved for purchasing fabric, tools, and other essentials for their daily lives. My grandfather had only completed eighth grade, yet he was the most intelligent person I had ever spent time with, surpassing even my own academic achievements as I pursued my dissertation to become Dr. Hauser. I’ve used the same wooden spoon in my kitchen for over five years, a testament to its resilience in a sea of discarded and broken counterparts. But beyond its culinary utility, the wooden spoon serves as a metaphor for the trajectory of wealth and mindset. In the hierarchy of spoons, the wooden spoon signifies a transition—a precarious balance between the single-use plastic spoon and the royal silver one.
