Do you bowl? I do and it has been a blessing to start bowling again. I bowled here and there with my mother when I was a child. She was an avid bowler and bowled since I could remember. When I was a young man, she gave me her bowling ball. So, I used it every time I went bowling. My mother and I have had a rocky relationship since I was a teenager. I know she loved me and did the best she could with what she had. However, I always expected and wanted more until I did my own reflecting. Several years ago, I lost that bowling ball and not too long after it destroyed my mother and I’s relationship. I did that often so I did not have to face my fears of being hurt again. When I was writing my book, I called my mother crying and she was there for me like she always had been. We think differently, we love differently, and still, I love the hell out of her. Building a 1000 square foot home with standard bricks typically requires around 7000 bricks. Each brick must be carefully laid, as any mistake can set off a domino effect, possibly leading to the structure’s collapse. I have fond memories of watching my Aunt’s brick home being constructed in the late 1970s. There were pallets of bricks all around, and each day showed significant progress. Although I had to leave before completion, when I returned the following summer, the house stood solid and welcoming. To me, the phrase “brick by brick” symbolizes the step-by-step approach, often involving manual labor. In life, many seek shortcuts or hacks to achieve their goals, but true accomplishments require embracing the process. Some may even pay for shortcuts, like buying a license in a trade or skill. My Aunt purchased a driver’s license but couldn’t drive, illustrating that shortcuts don’t grant true abilities. She had to learn to drive, just as I did. I distinctly remember learning to drive from my grandfather at a young age. Rainbows and Dodge Charger

As I ventured out into the rain, an walk I hadn’t initially wanted to do, I stumbled upon an awe-inspiring rainbow that stole my breath away. Capturing its beauty in a photograph, I pondered the profound reasons behind my affection for rainbows. My fondness stemmed from cherished memories of “The Wizard of Oz,” where the song, somewhere over the rainbow was my favorite part of the movie. It symbolized to me that something extraordinary awaited beyond the rainbow’s end. In times of trouble, as a child, I’d hum that tune, envisioning the wonders that lay ahead. But then came the moment when I was told that my admiration for rainbows was somehow “gay,” and that I, being a straight male, shouldn’t embrace them. Similarly, my adoration for the iconic TV show “The Dukes of Hazzard” and its iconic orange 1969 Dodge Charger, flaunting the Confederate flag, was tarnished. Cell phones and the Internet

The internet and cell phones are impacting relationships significantly. When I was growing up, five of us shared one house phone. I knew everyone who called for my sisters, mother, and stepdad. There was no expectation to return a call within a specific time frame. If I wanted to talk to a girl, I had to call her home and ask her parents for permission. This often involved the inevitable question, “who is this?” If I had a less-than-stellar reputation, her parents would either bar me from speaking to their child or interrogate her to ensure our relationship was platonic. This process instilled in me a deep respect for both adults and peers. Building relationships during that era was challenging without parents being aware. Many friends, both boys and girls, were only conversational companions during school hours. However, it was rare to encounter them outside of the school setting. The kids I associated with were known to their parents, and even today, those parents inquire about me, demonstrating the lasting impact of that indirect monitoring through the house phone. Men healing – Round 2

After last year’s unforgettable experience in Vermont for the first-ever Men’s Health Retreat, I knew this second gathering would be something special. But what I didn’t anticipate was how much deeper it would take root in my soil and fertilize my curious seed, not only as an attendee, but this time, as a facilitator of a workshop. This year, I didn’t just come to participate. I came to pour in — leading a workshop and offering restorative healing Manhood Yoga to a room full of powerful men of color. These weren’t just strangers. These were familiar faces and new souls alike, brothers who greet with hugs, dap, and that shared understanding. That kind of quiet knowing that only comes when you’ve been through some things and grown because of it. The energy hits different when you walk into a space and see men you’re proud to stand beside.
