We know what to do, We just don’t do it

In a world where information is at our fingertips and wisdom is more accessible than ever, why is it still so hard to do what we know we need to do? We have the tools, the knowledge, and the resources to succeed in our personal and professional lives, yet procrastination and complacency often get the better of us. It’s as if we’re caught in a loop of knowing but not doing, aware of what’s required to achieve our goals but choosing the path of least resistance instead. As a college student, a boyfriend, and a father, I’ve had my fair share of experiences where I knew exactly what needed to be done but failed to act. In college, assignments would pile up, and despite understanding that the only way to avoid stress was to start early, I often found myself cramming at the last minute. In relationships, I knew that open communication and active listening were key, yet I sometimes fell short, letting pride or distraction take over. As a father, I’ve understood the importance of being present and engaged, but there were times when work or fatigue made it easier to just go through the motions. Each of these,...

Walnut

&lt My grandmother’s house always puts a smile on my face. It was the most beautiful apartment in the world to me as a child, even though it was tucked inside the roughest projects in Mount Vernon, New York. Five towering ten-story brick buildings, stacked side by side, looming over a few tight acres of land. Off-street parking. A handful of basketball courts where the nets rarely lasted, and a playground that saw more fights than laughter some days. Outsiders feared these projects. They whispered about them like a forbidden place, a war zone. But for me, it was home. My second home. And I was never afraid. My grandmother’s apartment was a two-bedroom fortress with more locks than the U.S. Treasury. The sound of her unlocking the door was a ritual—a metallic symphony of bolts sliding, deadlocks clicking, chains rattling. And before you ever stepped inside, she cracked the door open just enough to peer through the chain, scanning to make sure you weren’t bringing unexpected company. That was normal to me. So normal that I never thought twice about it until I moved out of the city and realized not everyone lived behind layers of steel and suspicion.,...

Prime Time

Winners always stand out, and we gravitate towards them for a myriad of personal reasons. It’s exhilarating when our favorites emerge victorious, but what happens when someone we don’t particularly like succeeds? Do our personal biases matter if victory was earned fairly? There are numerous athletes I may not have liked, but I’ve learned to respect not just their skills, but who they are as individuals. Winning is no cakewalk; greatness is a Herculean task, and becoming the best or the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) borders on the impossible. The journey to the top lacks balance; it’s fueled by obsession, unwavering determination, and a mix of healthy and unhealthy energies. It’s that relentless drive that dismisses words like “can’t” and “NO!” Tim Grover aptly calls it the “dark side” in his book “Relentless”. This is the aspect of greatness that some might find unlikable, but it’s also what propels these individuals toward becoming the best or at least incredibly close to it. I can vividly recall prime time moments, listening to Dan Patrick, Brent Musburger, and Stuart Scott on ESPN Sports Center, fervently highlighting Deion Sanders’ plays. From his high-stepping dances in the endzone to his lockdown defensive skills,...

Half a Mint

I had to be about 20, maybe 21 years old. I don’t remember the exact year or day. I believe it was the summer of 1993. I was pushing a red 1988 Mustang LX. It was the worst car I ever had. It was a candy apple red, had factory rims, and a kicker box in the back seat. I would put it in the trunk when I picked up my friends. The system sounded muffled when I did so. I had a portable CD player that I would use through the tape deck with a cassette adapter. It would skip everytime I hit a bump. I just started smoking weed on a daily basis and my dreams of being a professional basketball player shifted to becoming a rapper. I was drinking and driving, smoking and driving, living to get high, drunk and laid. Does this sound familiar to you and your post high school days? I worked at a summer camp where all of the camp counselors were doing the same. We would work all day playing and working with kids from ages 6-14, then go play ball, eat, and find a place to hang out all night partying.,...

Your character is naked!

As I argued with my best man (Brandon, my oldest son), I was reminded of this Ed Mylet podcast I was listening to in which he was interviewing Eric Thomas ( ET the hip hop preacher). They were talking about “what you have will never change who you are.” ET mentioned a quote that went something like “ look in the mirror, not the window”. I do not recall who it was from or if that is the exact quote. What I do know is that I lost about 5 minutes of the podcast content while I was in deep thought. It dawned on me that “Character is Naked”. We could all agree or disagree that nothing changes if we don’t change. Meaning that some may say, if a person is unhappy now in their current relationship with their spouse, they will be unhappy in their next relationship. Others may say they will be happy in their next relationship because they were unhappy with the person they were in a relationship with.. Do people make you happy? ORRRRR do people add to your happiness? I hate to bust your bubble! People do not make people happy. Happiness comes from the,...
