2023 will be great because…

Happy new year! So often people hold off being amazing for days or months, waiting for a certain day or opportunity. Waiting is time wasted. That’s time you will never get back. There are occasions when we need to wait for a certain time. For example, you need to learn more about something, you have a surgery coming up, or you are recovering. In the fitness industry when someone tells me they want to wait for this day, they want to get ready for a wedding or vacation, or they do not have the time or money, I smile. My insides fill with emotions that rage and I use them in my next workout. Why? Why do I fill up with rage? I believe those are all the wrong reasons to get healthy or fit. I believe you get healthy or fit for life. My motivation is that I want to live forever. Right now, that is what I really want! So everything I do is fueled by eternal life. I am not perfect and I still have many variables to work on to be who I want to be. Yet, I still focus on living forever. For me, that,...

GITTY

This Friday I will be attending my aunt Bertha’s, also known as “Gitty” funeral. It will have passed by the time you will have read this. The last funeral I attended of someone in my family was my grandmother, who was also named Bertha. I never seem to remember dates. For some reason dates are not important to me. What is important in the memory that people leave with me. As a child I felt extremely close to my family. I felt like I knew everyone and spent a significant amount of time with them as well. As I aged I felt myself distancing myself away from my family. This is not done with any intent. It naturally takes place as young adults try to make their way through life. With that being said, tragedy, or death seems to bring people together. I would be lying if I knew my Aunt’s age and date of birth. I could cheat and find out. What is that worth? Not much. What is worth something is that I will get to see many of my family members who I have not seen in years. We will hug, cry, laugh, celebrate and talk about,...

Shame on us!

As a child, I often questioned the necessity of mundane tasks like brushing my teeth, attending school, and adhering to rules. They seemed like mere control tactics, albeit necessary ones. However, as I’ve grown, I’ve come to appreciate these seemingly trivial chores for what they truly are: character and discipline builders. I shudder to think what state my teeth would be in had I neglected daily brushing. The habit, ingrained in me since childhood, is now second nature. Looking back, my poor dietary habits as a youth resulted in multiple cavities, highlighting the importance of daily oral hygiene. Now, as a teacher, I grasp the significance of education in shaping a productive society. While I advocate for improvements in the public school system, I firmly believe in the transformative power of education. Despite holding three degrees, I reflect on my own educational journey with a tinge of regret. Rushing into college straight after high school, I lacked direction and squandered my undergraduate years in a haze of parties. Even during a year-long hiatus working, clarity eluded me. I simply knew I didn’t want a life confined to a factory. As for rules, I once scoffed at them, always seeking shortcuts—a,...

Men Matter

Growing up to this day I am faced with one consistent question. What is your nationality? I have been asked if I was Jamaican, Dominican, Mixed black and white, Puerto Rican and mixed Puerto Rican and black to name a few. I was always told that I was black. I believed this most of my young life. I recall in 5th or 6th grade doing a family tree. My father directed me to my grandfather and he gave me a history dating back to the early 1800’s. This information was accompanied with stories. I really felt like I knew my fathers side of the family. As a child we had family reunions and I would meet relatives from all over the United States. My great aunt’s and uncles would display so much pride in their heritage. My Grandfather was from the south and experienced racism in a different way then I did as a kid and adult. He was not fond of white folk, but always informed me that my family had white blood. It was not very clear to me the source of the white blood but I understood it as a woman had kids and may have even,...

The Prize 🏆

In the realm of childhood memories, few things evoke nostalgia quite like the thrill of discovering a prize hiding within a cereal box. As a youngster, I vividly recall eagerly shaking boxes, trying to be the first to claim the mysterious toy or sticker hidden within. It wasn’t just about the prize itself; it was about the anticipation, being the winner and the sheer joy of the unexpected. Reflecting on these experiences, it becomes apparent how deeply ingrained the concept of rewards and incentives is in our society. From cereal box treasures to the allure of a Happy Meal toy, we’re constantly bombarded with the promise of instant gratification. But what impact does this “prize-driven” mentality have on our lives, both then and now? We often quit before we obtain the rewards from our efforts in our lives. We want it now, not later!. Growing up surrounded by these incentives, I couldn’t help but notice their influence on my behavior and attitudes. The desire to obtain a prize often overshadowed any consideration for the product itself. It’s a pattern that extends far beyond childhood, shaping consumer habits and even personal aspirations. However, it’s essential to differentiate between earned rewards and,...
