Graduation 🧑‍🎓

This weekend, I had the honor of attending my niece’s graduation from Coastal Carolina University. As I sat among the sea of caps and gowns, witnessing the hopeful faces of tomorrow, I couldn’t help but reminisce about my own college graduation back in the halcyon days of 1997. Graduation day had stirred within me a whirlwind of emotions; I was filled with a mix of excitement and trepidation as I faced the looming prospect of adulthood. Reflecting on my collegiate journey, I realized that I hadn’t been the quintessential college student. With a modest GPA of 2.2, I often wondered how I managed to cross the finish line. Yet, here I was, a testament to the 30% of individuals who had earned a college degree. Surveying the room, I pondered how many of my fellow graduates shared a similar path. As the ceremony unfolded, I couldn’t shake the feeling of empathy for these fresh-faced graduates. For many of them, college had been a sanctuary—a bubble shielding them from the harsh realities of the world beyond campus gates. Life and Death

The one thing that is guaranteed in life, is death. This week I lost my step father. I do not have an amazing story to tell about him. In fact, for much of my life I had a profound resentment toward him. He never abused or mistreated me. I just felt abandoned by my mother because of him. Years ago I probably would have been happy if he passed. Today I feel empty. I have known this man for about 40 years. He practically was the only father my younger sister knew. He was my mothers husband. Those factors alone make it a difficult circumstance to deal with. He had been rapidly declining over the past year, so his passing was expected. Even though we know death is unavoidable, it still carries abundant pain and grief. I recall the many negative and positive encounters I had with my step dad during my childhood, resulting in a chuckle or a shake of the head. The luck of the Irish ☘️ or NOT 3/17/1998

On Saint Patrick’s day of 1998, my first born son was born. At least that is what I THOUGHT. During labor, I was kicked out of the room because I was watching the Georgetown Hoyas Basketball game the night prior when my son’s mother began to have contractions. It was the NIT and they lost to Georgia Tech, I believe. I was given the gift of a healthy baby boy. I cried for two reasons: 1) I was a father 2) I was scared to death. I had started a full time job 3 months prior and was dealing with a paternity case at the same time, as If that was not enough. I was out of control mentally and, in my opinion, my son’s mother was not much better. Before he was even born, the arguments were out of control and I was headed for a domestic case. That eventually happened and to be honest, I could and should have been arrested more times than I was. Silver Spoon!

In the realm of societal unbalance, there exists a phrase that reverberates with both envy and disdain: “born with a silver spoon.” It explains the notion of being born into immense wealth, shielded from the adversities that plague the majority of humanity. As I reflect on this concept, I am reminded of the stark realities of economic inequality that persist in our world. In my capacity as a black teacher and gym owner, I witness firsthand the disparities that exist and the systemic barriers that obstruct the path to prosperity for many including myself. Less than 2% of the population will never have to worry about money. These individuals were born with a silver spoon. This status is for life. Unlike a plastic spoon, a person born with a silver spoon will always have a silver spoon. It doesn’t matter what happens in their life; they will always be rich. The metaphor of the silver spoon speaks to the perpetuation of privilege across generations. It symbolizes not just material wealth, but also access to opportunities, networks, and resources that reinforce and amplify that wealth. For those born into affluent families, success often seems preordained, a birthright rather than an achievement.,...

Family growth

When do we lose the inhibition to question everything we do not know or understand? As a young boy, I recall bombarding my grandfather with hundreds of questions. He patiently answered many, while some remained mysteries. Yet, I trusted his opinion because he took the time to respond thoughtfully and honestly. Even though he might have told me a few white lies, like the existence of Santa Claus, my trust stemmed from his consistent effort to engage with my queries. I vividly remember a moment when I questioned my grandfather about my parents’ separation over the phone. Instead of giving a direct answer, he shared a story. At that tender age of about 10, I probably already knew the answer, but I wasn’t ready to accept it. His closing words, “You are blessed to know and have had your father, mother, and three of your grandparents in your life,” didn’t sit well with me at the time. I was longing for my father’s presence, oblivious to the bigger picture. Now, 41 years later, I reflect on that moment with gratitude.
