As a 70’s baby, I was brought up by the belt. The belt was the lesson and fear was the motivation. Any questions that raised me were responded to with “because I said so!” Does this quote sound familiar? Growing up, that was the way things were done. As a father, I proudly say I never spanked my kids. I yelled at them, sure, and got frustrated at times, but I never used the same methods that were applied to me. I’m not saying that parents who spanked their kids weren’t good parents—sometimes, that was just the way of the world back then. However, as times change, so too must the methods we use to raise and guide our children. Now, as an educator who has been working with kids for over 25 years, I can see we are living in a time of transition—one that has become increasingly complicated. Parents, in many ways, have lost control over their children, especially with the internet and the larger social infrastructure shaping our kids’ lives. How we became…

I was lucky, we had something in common. The first time you meet someone or have not seen someone in decades, you are extremely nervous. Although I had prepared for years for this occasion. There is no guarantee that the situation will go as I planned. As a former coach and basketball player, I have never been a part of a game that went as planned. The plan was to go to the Yankees game in the Bronx. We both loved the Yankees and thought this was a great idea. I had a lot of support/help during this process because my youngest son was with my girlfriend at that time. I was not sure what to expect and I am sure they felt the same way. I will ask them one day and have them explain it to you. The suspense is killing you, isn’t it? I guess it’s okay for me to tell you who I was meeting. I was meeting my oldest son whom I have not seen in over 14 years. I had not seen him since about 2001. The situation was complicated and I ran from the challenge. Public Schools

I have been a teacher for over 22 years. I have dedicated 18 of those years to public education. My advice to any parent approaching school age would be to consider homeschooling or enrolling your child in a private school. My teaching journey began during the era of the “No Child Left Behind” (NCLB) initiative, which aimed to prioritize the academic achievement of traditionally under-served groups of children, including low-income students, students with disabilities, and students from various racial and ethnic backgrounds. In theory, this initiative seemed commendable, but in practice, it has unfortunately left many students behind. In the past, if students didn’t meet the general requirements, they often had to repeat a grade. I recall this from my own school days in the 1980s, where some friends repeated grades due to a lack of effort or a slower learning pace, and yet, they lead successful lives today. Notably, these friends were of diverse backgrounds. Back then, there was a clear standard that students had to meet to progress, and if they didn’t, they either attended summer school or repeated the grade. This standard was upheld. For those who’ve been following my journey, reading my blogs, sharing my words, reflecting with me—I want to say thank you. Your presence matters. Your support matters. But lately, I know you’ve noticed: I haven’t been blogging every week like I used to. That’s not because I stopped growing, or because I’ve run out of things to say. Quite the opposite. I’ve been doing deep work. I’ve been working on myself—the man I am and the man I’m becoming. Spiritually. Emotionally. Physically. I’ve been facing the mirror not just to look, but to see. Uber Encounters: Episode 1, A Ride with Daniel

Driving for Uber is like being on a reality show where every episode features a new cast of characters. People from all walks of life hop into your car, each with their own stories and destinations. It’s the best part of the job, second only to the money. One of the most fascinating individuals I’ve met so far was a man named Daniel, meeting him felt like I stumbled onto an episode of Extraordinary People. The pick-up was at a typical apartment complex. I pulled into the lot and waited. A minute or two later, I spotted my passenger—a short, sharply dressed Asian man. As he walked toward my truck, it became clear that Daniel had no arms. Naturally, I rolled down my window and offered, “Hey, need a hand?” He smiled, shook his head no, and without hesitation, opened the truck door without any problems..
