It was just EMAIL

The internet has permeated every aspect of our lives, evolving from a mere tool to a ubiquitous force shaping our daily existence. In its nascent stage, I recall engaging with primitive platforms like email, Myspace, and Yahoo/AOL chats. Amazon and eBay were confined to selling books and facilitating shopping, yet even then, the digital landscape was rife with bots and explicit content. In 2008, I took my first plunge into the social media realm via Facebook on my mobile device, marking a paradigm shift. Today, it’s commonplace to witness individuals perpetually glued to their phones, with toddlers replacing books with iPads. Our world has become an intricate web, and many find themselves entangled, unable to envision life without their cell phones. Reflecting on the early 1990s, I nostalgically recall exchanging letters with a woman from Germany, waiting eagerly for responses that took up to 14 days. Communication was an art, and the joy of receiving a letter was unparalleled. International calls were a luxury due to exorbitant costs, leading to the prevalence of written correspondence. Fast forward to the present, where a $100 monthly investment grants access to a plethora of services through a handheld device—talks, texts, videos, shopping, food,...

HAM AVE

About a decade ago while visiting my older sister in Greenwich Ct, I took her daughter to the basketball court that I grew up playing at. In my opinion from 1989-1993 that was my court. I did not own the court, however I was the baller that you had to earn respect from. The court and area was so different. It was much nicer. It had nice clear backboards and break away rims. It also had two hoops and not four like the Ham ave court I grew up playing on. It was nice to shoot on the new court however I could not keep the visions of the old court and moments that took place there. I mean from games such as butts up, stick ball, kickball, basketball, football, and tag to the after school fights. Not to mention riding bikes down the steps and skateboarding. Ham ave was my home away from home. It was not only the place where I went to elementary school, it was the place where I groomed my basketball game and the place where I met my older son’s mother. When I was in fifth grade Ham ave was the all in one,...

2023 will be great because…

Happy new year! So often people hold off being amazing for days or months, waiting for a certain day or opportunity. Waiting is time wasted. That’s time you will never get back. There are occasions when we need to wait for a certain time. For example, you need to learn more about something, you have a surgery coming up, or you are recovering. In the fitness industry when someone tells me they want to wait for this day, they want to get ready for a wedding or vacation, or they do not have the time or money, I smile. My insides fill with emotions that rage and I use them in my next workout. Why? Why do I fill up with rage? I believe those are all the wrong reasons to get healthy or fit. I believe you get healthy or fit for life. My motivation is that I want to live forever. Right now, that is what I really want! So everything I do is fueled by eternal life. I am not perfect and I still have many variables to work on to be who I want to be. Yet, I still focus on living forever. For me, that,...

Public Schools

I have been a teacher for over 22 years. I have dedicated 18 of those years to public education. My advice to any parent approaching school age would be to consider homeschooling or enrolling your child in a private school. My teaching journey began during the era of the “No Child Left Behind” (NCLB) initiative, which aimed to prioritize the academic achievement of traditionally under-served groups of children, including low-income students, students with disabilities, and students from various racial and ethnic backgrounds. In theory, this initiative seemed commendable, but in practice, it has unfortunately left many students behind. In the past, if students didn’t meet the general requirements, they often had to repeat a grade. I recall this from my own school days in the 1980s, where some friends repeated grades due to a lack of effort or a slower learning pace, and yet, they lead successful lives today. Notably, these friends were of diverse backgrounds. Back then, there was a clear standard that students had to meet to progress, and if they didn’t, they either attended summer school or repeated the grade. This standard was upheld. However, NCLB has created a disconnect between the classroom and real-life consequences. I’ve,...
