In the realm of childhood memories, few things evoke nostalgia quite like the thrill of discovering a prize hiding within a cereal box. As a youngster, I vividly recall eagerly shaking boxes, trying to be the first to claim the mysterious toy or sticker hidden within. It wasn’t just about the prize itself; it was about the anticipation, being the winner and the sheer joy of the unexpected. Reflecting on these experiences, it becomes apparent how deeply ingrained the concept of rewards and incentives is in our society. From cereal box treasures to the allure of a Happy Meal toy, we’re constantly bombarded with the promise of instant gratification. But what impact does this “prize-driven” mentality have on our lives, both then and now? We often quit before we obtain the rewards from our efforts in our lives. We want it now, not later!. Leaders going bad!

It only takes one person to make a real stand and bring about change within a system. It has been more than 50 years since teachers went on strike and refused to work. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, many teachers started leaving their jobs and careers in search of better opportunities. The pandemic has further accelerated this trend. What is the problem? There are numerous problems, as is the case everywhere and at all times. However, many of these problems can actually be seen as opportunities. Schools and their staff have the potential to create amazing learning environments. Will this happen? Yes, in some schools, but in most cases, no. I have been a teacher for 22 years and have had eight different leaders. Out of these eight, two were truly exceptional at their jobs and effectively utilized their staff. One of them was not only competent but also a good person, while the other was quite challenging to work with. The latter managed 33 staff members for only 37 students, displaying rudeness and a lack of empathy towards others. Brown Paper Bag

Reflecting on childhood memories often brings to mind simpler times, like the excitement of packing a favorite lunchbox for school. For me, it was a toss-up between my Superman and Hulk lunchboxes – iconic symbols of my youthful enthusiasm. Do you recall your cherished lunch containers? The tradition of packing lunches might seem like a relic from the past, especially in today’s fast-paced world. Yet, I can still vividly recall the care my mother took in preparing my midday meal. Deli sandwiches were a staple, adorned with a choice of condiments – mustard for liverwurst, ham, and bologna, and mayo for roast beef and turkey. However, nothing could surpass the timeless appeal of a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The jelly flavor was inconsequential; it was the creamy peanut butter that always won my heart. When a warm meal was on the cards, my mother’s ingenious solution was Campbell’s chicken noodle soup or Chef Boyardee, packed snugly in an insulated canister to keep it piping hot until lunchtime. AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

When I was a 21-year-old college student at Eastern Connecticut State University, I wrote a paper on affirmative action. The assignment required us to choose a civil matter and argue both for and against its necessity. As a black student, I chose to wholeheartedly support affirmative action. At that time, I wasn’t particularly academically inclined or focused on setting goals in life. Instead, I was enjoying the social aspects and party atmosphere of college. Needless to say, this topic held emotional significance for me, which motivated me to put forth a tremendous effort. I presented compelling data that made my paper highly persuasive, and I was thrilled to receive an A-, which was a significant achievement for me at the time. During class discussions, some of my classmates, who happened to be white males, voiced their disagreement with my paper. In my younger years, I automatically assumed that their dissenting opinions stemmed from racism. Fast forward 29 years to June 29th, 2023, when the Supreme Court announced that colleges are no longer required to consider race as a factor in the admissions process. BLACK numbers MATTER!

Just another night in Vegas at the roulette table—talking, laughing, and enjoying the company of people from various places. Although I wasn’t hitting jackpot-sized wins, I was doing well. A group of men, dressed in jeans, boots, and cowboy hats, joined our game, seemingly in town for the Nations Rodeo finals. Despite my urban appearance, my love for country music and lifestyle is genuine. As they boisterously joined, the once-relaxed vibe at the table became awkward. Playing odd/even and red/black, one of them loudly declared, “Let’s go black!” followed by a questionable remark about “black numbers matter,” eliciting uncomfortable silence. I chose not to escalate the situation; after all, I wasn’t in Vegas for conflict. The table remained quiet until they left. I refused to let the incident ruin my night, choosing to focus on the positive. Reflecting the next morning, it struck me how rare it is for me to be offended by racial comments. While I’ve not supported movements like BLM, I found these men’s remarks out of line. It made me realize the prevalence of hate in the world.
