In the realm of childhood memories, few things evoke nostalgia quite like the thrill of discovering a prize hiding within a cereal box. As a youngster, I vividly recall eagerly shaking boxes, trying to be the first to claim the mysterious toy or sticker hidden within. It wasn’t just about the prize itself; it was about the anticipation, being the winner and the sheer joy of the unexpected. Reflecting on these experiences, it becomes apparent how deeply ingrained the concept of rewards and incentives is in our society. From cereal box treasures to the allure of a Happy Meal toy, we’re constantly bombarded with the promise of instant gratification. Lesson’s vs. The belt

As a 70’s baby, I was brought up by the belt. The belt was the lesson and fear was the motivation. Any questions that raised me were responded to with “because I said so!” Does this quote sound familiar? Growing up, that was the way things were done. As a father, I proudly say I never spanked my kids. I yelled at them, sure, and got frustrated at times, but I never used the same methods that were applied to me. I’m not saying that parents who spanked their kids weren’t good parents—sometimes, that was just the way of the world back then. However, as times change, so too must the methods we use to raise and guide our children. Now, as an educator who has been working with kids for over 25 years, I can see we are living in a time of transition—one that has become increasingly complicated. I’ve used the same wooden spoon in my kitchen for over five years, a testament to its resilience in a sea of discarded and broken counterparts. But beyond its culinary utility, the wooden spoon serves as a metaphor for the trajectory of wealth and mindset. In the hierarchy of spoons, the wooden spoon signifies a transition—a precarious balance between the single-use plastic spoon and the royal silver one. Bathroom Trophies!!

While my wife and I were designing our new home, I stumbled upon my collection of awards, degrees, and certifications. Reflecting on each one and their impact on my life, I remembered how I used to proudly display them in the living room of my previous homes, showcasing my achievements to all who entered. These accolades hold a special place in my heart, representing years of dedication and hard work. Yet, as I contemplated where to showcase these milestones, my perspective began to shift. Each degree represents a personal sacrifice, every reward carries a unique story, and each certification has come at a price. Earning my bachelor’s degree was an uphill battle that spanned six challenging years. Despite facing homelessness, losing my best friend to murder, job instability, and parenthood, I persevered and obtained my four-year degree in an unrelated field. My journey continued with pursuing a Masters degree while juggling two full-time jobs, navigating a complex relationship, and coping with the passing of my grandfather ( My best friend).
