How America’s Past Disables Its Future

“Happy is a Nation with no history.” I read this quote the other day and it has stuck to me like velcro. But America is not that country. Our history is long, complicated, and full of contradictions. We are a nation built on bold ideals—freedom, justice, and opportunity—yet our foundation is cracked by conquest, oppression, and division. And now, in an era where information is limitless, we are trapped by our past more than ever. I know the power of history because I’ve lived it. My past is full of struggles, pain, and hard times. But it was those struggles that shaped me, that built my resilience, that made me the man I am today. I don’t run from my past—I learn from it, I grow from it, and I refuse to let it define my future. Yet, in America, we do the opposite. We are stuck in a loop of guilt, blame, and division, constantly trying to rewrite, erase, or weaponize history. We cannot escape the conquering of Native Americans, the stain of slavery, the era of Jim Crow, or the impact of wars that have left scars on the world. Small Town

Hot topic today is the Jason Aldean’s song “try that in a small town”. When I first heard the song I did not think anything of it. In fact I was feeling it. Much like I was feeling the 2004 rap song by Ja Rule “ New York”. For those that do not know me I am 75 % African mostly Nigerian and 25 % European mostly Italian. I have two biracial children and my wife is white. I am an educator and small business owner. I was an inspired rapper and I am a poet and a published Author. My background is significant to some. I see myself as an American and I believe America is the greatest country in the world. As I should because it’s the only one I truly know. Now let’s talk! Silver Spoon!

In the realm of societal unbalance, there exists a phrase that reverberates with both envy and disdain: “born with a silver spoon.” It explains the notion of being born into immense wealth, shielded from the adversities that plague the majority of humanity. As I reflect on this concept, I am reminded of the stark realities of economic inequality that persist in our world. In my capacity as a black teacher and gym owner, I witness firsthand the disparities that exist and the systemic barriers that obstruct the path to prosperity for many including myself. Less than 2% of the population will never have to worry about money. These individuals were born with a silver spoon. This status is for life. Unlike a plastic spoon, a person born with a silver spoon will always have a silver spoon. It doesn’t matter what happens in their life; they will always be rich. The metaphor of the silver spoon speaks to the perpetuation of privilege across generations. It symbolizes not just material wealth, but also access to opportunities, networks, and resources that reinforce and amplify that wealth. For those born into affluent families, success often seems preordained, a birthright rather than an achievement.,...

Imagine this!!!!

Last week, I posted a picture that unfortunately contained misinformation. My intention was to present a challenging question, not to take a side on the issue. This sparked a heated discussion among people on both sides. Long story short, I was wrong for posting it, and when someone asked me to take it down, I did so immediately and offered an apology. I apologized for two main reasons. First, I recognized that posting misleading information was not appropriate, and my intention was never to offend anyone. Second, I needed to take responsibility for my actions and move forward. Admitting my mistake and apologizing is a sign of humanity and humility. It shows that we are capable of growth through acknowledging our errors. Imagine this… Donald Trump emerging in Minneapolis, Minnesota shortly after George Floyd was killed, addressing the nation, and saying something like this: “Americans, our system has failed us once again.” He then lists the names of several Black men and other individuals of different races who were killed by the police under seemingly unjust circumstances. Wooden Spoon

The humble wooden spoon, a utensil often underestimated yet possessing remarkable longevity if cared for properly. I’ve used the same wooden spoon in my kitchen for over five years, a testament to its resilience in a sea of discarded and broken counterparts. But beyond its culinary utility, the wooden spoon serves as a metaphor for the trajectory of wealth and mindset. In the hierarchy of spoons, the wooden spoon signifies a transition—a precarious balance between the single-use plastic spoon and the royal silver one. It symbolizes the legacy we leave behind, whether it be tangible assets like homes and businesses or intangible wealth such as wisdom and values. While some are born into privilege, wielding silver spoons from the start, many begin with humble beginnings, clutching plastic spoons that signify struggle and scarcity.
