Failed Starts

The notion of New Year, Monday, next month, or after my birthday often serves as a delaying tactic for embarking on new, challenging endeavors. The allure of fresh starts is compelling, especially when the concept of a clean slate is ingrained in our culture. However, true change doesn’t need a specific date; the time is always now. It should always be now! There’s no valid reason to postpone the commencement of a journey. Those who procrastinate risk being left behind, often finding convenient excuses for their current life situation—commonly citing reasons like kids, jobs, time, or money. As a gym owner, I’ve encountered countless individuals who declare specific dates to kickstart their fitness program, only to fade into silence. Many talk themselves out of taking the necessary steps. Money and time become the top excuses, particularly when faced with the prospect of committing to a gym that demands accountability. Opting for the allure of a big box gym with a cheap monthly membership fee allows for sporadic attendance and a false sense of accomplishment. Unlike the impersonal environment of larger gyms where your name may go unnoticed, small box gyms like mine prioritize personal connection. We call our members to,...

Silver Spoon!

In the realm of societal unbalance, there exists a phrase that reverberates with both envy and disdain: “born with a silver spoon.” It explains the notion of being born into immense wealth, shielded from the adversities that plague the majority of humanity. As I reflect on this concept, I am reminded of the stark realities of economic inequality that persist in our world. In my capacity as a black teacher and gym owner, I witness firsthand the disparities that exist and the systemic barriers that obstruct the path to prosperity for many including myself. Less than 2% of the population will never have to worry about money. These individuals were born with a silver spoon. This status is for life. Unlike a plastic spoon, a person born with a silver spoon will always have a silver spoon. It doesn’t matter what happens in their life; they will always be rich. The metaphor of the silver spoon speaks to the perpetuation of privilege across generations. It symbolizes not just material wealth, but also access to opportunities, networks, and resources that reinforce and amplify that wealth. For those born into affluent families, success often seems preordained, a birthright rather than an achievement.,...

Shame on us!

As a child, I often questioned the necessity of mundane tasks like brushing my teeth, attending school, and adhering to rules. They seemed like mere control tactics, albeit necessary ones. However, as I’ve grown, I’ve come to appreciate these seemingly trivial chores for what they truly are: character and discipline builders. I shudder to think what state my teeth would be in had I neglected daily brushing. The habit, ingrained in me since childhood, is now second nature. Looking back, my poor dietary habits as a youth resulted in multiple cavities, highlighting the importance of daily oral hygiene. Now, as a teacher, I grasp the significance of education in shaping a productive society. While I advocate for improvements in the public school system, I firmly believe in the transformative power of education. Despite holding three degrees, I reflect on my own educational journey with a tinge of regret. Rushing into college straight after high school, I lacked direction and squandered my undergraduate years in a haze of parties. Even during a year-long hiatus working, clarity eluded me. I simply knew I didn’t want a life confined to a factory. As for rules, I once scoffed at them, always seeking shortcuts—a,...

Rainbows and Dodge Charger

As I ventured out into the rain, an walk I hadn’t initially wanted to do, I stumbled upon an awe-inspiring rainbow that stole my breath away. Capturing its beauty in a photograph, I pondered the profound reasons behind my affection for rainbows. My fondness stemmed from cherished memories of “The Wizard of Oz,” where the song, somewhere over the rainbow was my favorite part of the movie. It symbolized to me that something extraordinary awaited beyond the rainbow’s end. In times of trouble, as a child, I’d hum that tune, envisioning the wonders that lay ahead. But then came the moment when I was told that my admiration for rainbows was somehow “gay,” and that I, being a straight male, shouldn’t embrace them. Similarly, my adoration for the iconic TV show “The Dukes of Hazzard” and its iconic orange 1969 Dodge Charger, flaunting the Confederate flag, was tarnished. I owned all the show’s toys, including the car, flag and all, until an older cousin from North Carolina shared a different perspective, explaining that the flag represented something divisive and no black person should like that car air watch that show.. These two symbols, once laden with joyful fantasies, were marred,...

Your vote is NOT your voice!

We’ve all been told that voting is the cornerstone of democracy, that our vote is our voice, and that every vote counts. But the truth is, when you’re an independent thinker, it becomes pretty clear that not every vote truly represents every voice. The system is designed in a way that favors those with money and power, leaving the rest of us to question if our voice really matters in the grand scheme of things. I used to believe that voting was a direct way to influence change, but the more I learned, the clearer the picture became – and it’s not a pretty one. The Influence of Money on Politics Let’s start with the elephant in the room: money. In today’s political system, financial support often determines the outcome of elections, not just the number of votes. Think about it – candidates backed by corporations, lobbyists, or wealthy donors have a significant advantage. They flood the airwaves, social media, and billboards with their messages, while grassroots candidates struggle to be heard. A study by Princeton professors Martin Gilens and Benjamin I. Page in 2014 revealed a hard truth: U.S. policies overwhelmingly reflect the preferences of economic elites.  (attached a,...
