As I ventured out into the rain, an walk I hadn’t initially wanted to do, I stumbled upon an awe-inspiring rainbow that stole my breath away. Capturing its beauty in a photograph, I pondered the profound reasons behind my affection for rainbows. My fondness stemmed from cherished memories of “The Wizard of Oz,” where the song, somewhere over the rainbow was my favorite part of the movie. It symbolized to me that something extraordinary awaited beyond the rainbow’s end. In times of trouble, as a child, I’d hum that tune, envisioning the wonders that lay ahead. But then came the moment when I was told that my admiration for rainbows was somehow “gay,” and that I, being a straight male, shouldn’t embrace them. Similarly, my adoration for the iconic TV show “The Dukes of Hazzard” and its iconic orange 1969 Dodge Charger, flaunting the Confederate flag, was tarnished. Christmas Reflection

Christmas has been many things to me over the course of my life, each chapter defined by where I was, who I was, and what I believed. It’s not just a holiday—it’s a mirror reflecting the seasons of my soul. As a child in a Lutheran school, Christmas was pure, untouchable, holy. It was about Christ in the manger, the shepherds guided by the star, and the profound meaning of a Savior’s birth. I remember the hymns, the Nativity plays, the sermons that made the story of Jesus come alive. It wasn’t about gifts—it was about grace, about the miracle of light piercing through darkness. Back then, my Christmases felt like an unbroken connection to something bigger than myself. I sang joy to the world at a catholic church this past weekend and it bought back so many memories. That connection faded when I transitioned to public school in the fifth grade. Men Matter

Growing up to this day I am faced with one consistent question. What is your nationality? I have been asked if I was Jamaican, Dominican, Mixed black and white, Puerto Rican and mixed Puerto Rican and black to name a few. I was always told that I was black. I believed this most of my young life. I recall in 5th or 6th grade doing a family tree. My father directed me to my grandfather and he gave me a history dating back to the early 1800’s. This information was accompanied with stories. I really felt like I knew my fathers side of the family. As a child we had family reunions and I would meet relatives from all over the United States. My great aunt’s and uncles would display so much pride in their heritage. My Grandfather was from the south and experienced racism in a different way then I did as a kid and adult. Small Town

Hot topic today is the Jason Aldean’s song “try that in a small town”. When I first heard the song I did not think anything of it. In fact I was feeling it. Much like I was feeling the 2004 rap song by Ja Rule “ New York”. For those that do not know me I am 75 % African mostly Nigerian and 25 % European mostly Italian. I have two biracial children and my wife is white. I am an educator and small business owner. I was an inspired rapper and I am a poet and a published Author. My background is significant to some. NO Child left behind!!

A few weeks ago, I had the honor of speaking as part of Professor Booker’s keynote presentation at an educational conference at Wesleyan College in Middletown, Connecticut. My focus was on social promotion, a practice that, in my experience, does more harm than good. Social promotion is nothing more than a system’s way of labeling students and pushing them forward without ensuring they meet academic standards. When I was in school, if a minority student didn’t do well on standardized tests, the common justification was that the test was culturally biased. While I agreed with this idea to an extent, I also understood that culture is not simply what we are born into—it is what we are exposed to, taught, and immersed in. If someone is raised within a society, they will inevitably learn that culture. Instead of adjusting how we assess students and ensuring that all students have access to meaningful, relevant learning, the system moved in the opposite direction. Over time, standardized testing has lost its role in education, and students are now being moved forward without ever proving they understand the material. The impact of this is clear.
