I am afraid

Imagine an open wound in the deepest part of your heart, without ever healing a dull rusty razor blade is pushed upward into the raw scar tissue. On occasion salt is sprinkled all over this organ like a southern meal. Then it is wrapped tightly in a cast as if it were a broken arm. Puss and fluid drip slowly and consistently. That heart is inside the king of the jungle, a LION with the mindset of an eagle and the saveness of a fox. Severely wounded and left in the wilderness to survive. DEAR LIFE, I AM AFRAID

Bathroom Trophies!!

While my wife and I were designing our new home, I stumbled upon my collection of awards, degrees, and certifications. Reflecting on each one and their impact on my life, I remembered how I used to proudly display them in the living room of my previous homes, showcasing my achievements to all who entered. These accolades hold a special place in my heart, representing years of dedication and hard work. Yet, as I contemplated where to showcase these milestones, my perspective began to shift. Each degree represents a personal sacrifice, every reward carries a unique story, and each certification has come at a price. Earning my bachelor’s degree was an uphill battle that spanned six challenging years. Despite facing homelessness, losing my best friend to murder, job instability, and parenthood, I persevered and obtained my four-year degree in an unrelated field. My journey continued with pursuing a Masters degree while juggling two full-time jobs, navigating a complex relationship, and coping with the passing of my grandfather ( My best friend). Despite the obstacles, I graduated with a 3.7 GPA, overcame legal challenges, and secured a teaching license in Connecticut. Now, as a Doctoral candidate, I recognize that my path has,...

DUSTY!

I was raised around dogs my entire life. I also was afraid of all dogs except for the ones that lived in my home. This fear was justified by the many bad experiences that I had with a number of different dogs both big and small. I have been chased, bitten and had my food taken from my plate and even right out of my hand. Even though all these awful things happened to me as a child I still love dogs. To me, dogs are like people. They are all different! My first and favorite dog was Puggi. I would be lying if I told you I knew what type of dog he was. I believe he was a mutt. Puggi was my grandfather’s dog and he was super friendly and protective at the same time. We were living in Mount Vernon NY. I felt like there were dogs everywhere and I do not recall too many people walking their dogs with leashes. Most dogs were tied up in the backyard on a long leash, fenced in the yard, or just left loose to roam the neighborhood. The first kind of dog I had a fear of were German,...

Avoidence

Avoidance was the primary reason for my mediocre performance during my college and early adult years. I was a master of procrastination. I even avoided acknowledging uncomfortable truths about myself and missed countless opportunities for self-improvement. Take a moment to think about the things you currently avoid. Without even knowing you, I can predict that many of the things you avoid are precisely those that could catalyze your growth and enhance your life. Now, some of you, the fellow master avoiders reading this, might say things like, “I avoid my ex because they are toxic,” or “I avoid public places because of the violence.” To that, I can only say: you are not ready to become the best version of yourself because you are still finding excuses to avoid situations. PERIOD! In my experience, I avoided challenges that seemed daunting and confronting my fears. But facing your fears is the best way to live! One of my biggest fears during college was not being good enough to play basketball at the collegiate level. Everyone around me had immense confidence that I would excel in collegiate basketball. However, I didn’t share their confidence. So, I avoided team meetings, conditioning sessions, strength,...
