Bathroom Trophies!!

While my wife and I were designing our new home, I stumbled upon my collection of awards, degrees, and certifications. Reflecting on each one and their impact on my life, I remembered how I used to proudly display them in the living room of my previous homes, showcasing my achievements to all who entered. These accolades hold a special place in my heart, representing years of dedication and hard work.
Yet, as I contemplated where to showcase these milestones, my perspective began to shift. Each degree represents a personal sacrifice, every reward carries a unique story, and each certification has come at a price. Earning my bachelor’s degree was an uphill battle that spanned six challenging years. Despite facing homelessness, losing my best friend to murder, job instability, and parenthood, I persevered and obtained my four-year degree in an unrelated field.
My journey continued with pursuing a Masters degree while juggling two full-time jobs, navigating a complex relationship, and coping with the passing of my grandfather ( My best friend). Despite the obstacles, I graduated with a 3.7 GPA, overcame legal challenges, and secured a teaching license in Connecticut.
Now, as a Doctoral candidate, I recognize that my path has been anything but easy. The choices I made in life often added to the complexity. Yet, through these experiences, I’ve gained invaluable life lessons. One of them is the realization that chasing your dreams requires confronting your darkest fears head-on. I’ve also learned that every breath we take offers an opportunity, regardless of our current circumstances. Lastly, I’ve come to understand that the lowest points in our journey are merely stepping stones toward reaching greater heights.
So, where have I decided to display my achievements? In an unconventional yet meaningful choice, I’ve opted to hang them in the bathroom. This space represents a private realm where we tackle challenges unseen by others. Just as we emerge from this space transformed and refreshed, my journey has transformed me, shaping who I am today. The living room may symbolize comfort, but my journey has been far from it. The kitchen may evoke pleasure, but my path was no fairy tale. In fact, there were times when my journey literally and metaphorically stank, like the moments spent in a jail cell.
The bathroom is a metaphor for the behind-the-scenes effort that goes into personal development. It’s where we undertake essential tasks that others don’t witness, yet those tasks shape us into who we are. While my accomplishments remain dear to me, I’ve come to value the process even more. Displaying them in the bathroom serves as a reminder of the struggles I’ve overcome and the growth I’ve achieved. No longer driven to flaunt my achievements, I’m focused on the work that still lies ahead.
