Do we often quit what we start? Do we fail more than we quit? Is quitting the same as failure? Why do we quit? Is failure a part of the process? These are questions I’ve been asking myself over the last several decades. Over the past ten years, I haven’t quit anything. While some relationships didn’t work out, I didn’t quit; rather, we simply weren’t compatible. Beyond those relationships, I continue to work towards several goals. I haven’t failed, even though I’m not yet where I want to be. Take a moment to evaluate yourself. I typically set a goal and outline a few objectives to help me achieve it. One goal I started working on about a year and a half ago is to have a million dollars in cash or in the bank or a brokerage account by age 55. My retirement accounts don’t count towards this goal. I began this journey on January 11, 2023, my 50th birthday, with zero savings. I was buying a new home with a mortgage, despite not having a mortgage for the previous two years. The humble wooden spoon, a utensil often underestimated yet possessing remarkable longevity if cared for properly. I’ve used the same wooden spoon in my kitchen for over five years, a testament to its resilience in a sea of discarded and broken counterparts. But beyond its culinary utility, the wooden spoon serves as a metaphor for the trajectory of wealth and mindset. In the hierarchy of spoons, the wooden spoon signifies a transition—a precarious balance between the single-use plastic spoon and the royal silver one. Unlike award shows, concerts, or political debates, where viewership is divided, the Super Bowl brings America together for a single moment, a rare instance where we all witness the same thing simultaneously. Lesson’s vs. The belt

As a 70’s baby, I was brought up by the belt. The belt was the lesson and fear was the motivation. Any questions that raised me were responded to with “because I said so!” Does this quote sound familiar? Growing up, that was the way things were done. As a father, I proudly say I never spanked my kids. I yelled at them, sure, and got frustrated at times, but I never used the same methods that were applied to me. I’m not saying that parents who spanked their kids weren’t good parents—sometimes, that was just the way of the world back then. However, as times change, so too must the methods we use to raise and guide our children. Now, as an educator who has been working with kids for over 25 years, I can see we are living in a time of transition—one that has become increasingly complicated. Parents, in many ways, have lost control over their children, especially with the internet and the larger social infrastructure shaping our kids’ lives. Independent Thinker

I was born into a left family, surrounded by the Democratic Party. Without truly understanding their values, I was told the Republican Party was racist, which influenced my support for the Democrats for almost two decades as a young adult. Meeting Republicans made me question my assumptions, realizing I hadn’t truly seen them as individuals. I lacked education about both parties and blindly followed Democratic volunteers’ advice at the voting booth ( they would tell you as you where going to vote to vote rows). The turning point came in 2008 when Obama was elected; I felt disconnected from both parties. I’m not an old school liberal or anti-government; I simply refuse to support what I disagree with based solely on party affiliation. Too much focus lies on parties, not candidates. I believe that if Trump were a Democrat or Biden a Republican, many within those parties would NOT switch allegiances. They would supporT “ THEIR” party! Political parties often overshadow candidate qualities good, bad or indifferent. I’m neither right nor left; I’m ambidextrous politically.
