Step Up Your Game, Coach: Leading by Example

Years ago, I had the privilege of coaching and serving as the Director of Athletics at a high school in Hartford, CT. Man, I loved the job, but let’s be real: I didn’t love every part of it. Being a coach isn’t just about calling plays or running drills; it’s about showing up, day in and day out, as the best version of yourself. As a coach, I tried to lead by example. I showed my players how to act—I didn’t just tell them. I hit the gym daily, I watched what I ate, especially when I was in front of my athletes. I tried to be the coach I wish I had when I was growing up. But when I looked around at some of my peers, it was a different story. A lot of coaches were eating fast food on the go, skipping workouts, and acting more like the kids they were supposed to be leading than actual role models. If you’re reading this as a coach, you might get offended, but that’s a you problem. It’s time to step up your game. Why Being in Shape Matters as a Coach Let’s talk facts: if you’re coaching but,...

Remembering my friend

Thank you. I know I never said that to you when I had the chance. Thank you for being my first friend after I moved to Connecticut. Who would have thought you would live the life you lived back in 1982 on your 13th birthday? Our friendship wasn’t separated by hard feelings. You moved away, and we both moved forward with life. I was taken back when your sister sent me this photo and told me you were gone. I was trying to recall the last time we saw each other. My guess would be over 35 years. Still and all, I remembered how you helped me transition from New York to Greenwich. It was the most difficult transition of my childhood. You were one of my few friends who ever met my father, and it was around this time my father and mother separated. You were there for me during that time, keeping me busy with boy stuff—bike riding, sports, and, of course, MTV videos. We had so much in common, the older brother of two sisters, and now we both shared the responsibility of being the man of the house. Both of us then had to adjust to,...

Shame on us!

As a child, I often questioned the necessity of mundane tasks like brushing my teeth, attending school, and adhering to rules. They seemed like mere control tactics, albeit necessary ones. However, as I’ve grown, I’ve come to appreciate these seemingly trivial chores for what they truly are: character and discipline builders. I shudder to think what state my teeth would be in had I neglected daily brushing. The habit, ingrained in me since childhood, is now second nature. Looking back, my poor dietary habits as a youth resulted in multiple cavities, highlighting the importance of daily oral hygiene. Now, as a teacher, I grasp the significance of education in shaping a productive society. While I advocate for improvements in the public school system, I firmly believe in the transformative power of education. Despite holding three degrees, I reflect on my own educational journey with a tinge of regret. Rushing into college straight after high school, I lacked direction and squandered my undergraduate years in a haze of parties. Even during a year-long hiatus working, clarity eluded me. I simply knew I didn’t want a life confined to a factory. As for rules, I once scoffed at them, always seeking shortcuts—a,...

Failed Starts

The notion of New Year, Monday, next month, or after my birthday often serves as a delaying tactic for embarking on new, challenging endeavors. The allure of fresh starts is compelling, especially when the concept of a clean slate is ingrained in our culture. However, true change doesn’t need a specific date; the time is always now. It should always be now! There’s no valid reason to postpone the commencement of a journey. Those who procrastinate risk being left behind, often finding convenient excuses for their current life situation—commonly citing reasons like kids, jobs, time, or money. As a gym owner, I’ve encountered countless individuals who declare specific dates to kickstart their fitness program, only to fade into silence. Many talk themselves out of taking the necessary steps. Money and time become the top excuses, particularly when faced with the prospect of committing to a gym that demands accountability. Opting for the allure of a big box gym with a cheap monthly membership fee allows for sporadic attendance and a false sense of accomplishment. Unlike the impersonal environment of larger gyms where your name may go unnoticed, small box gyms like mine prioritize personal connection. We call our members to,...

My circle, The power of the Mat!

As I stood on the mat, rooted yet weightless amidst the palpable energy, my mind embarked on a journey. Nine men, all of color on this particular day, were poised to enter tranquility alongside me. I am both a student and a teacher of yoga, still navigating the novice levels, yet to some in the group, I appeared as an expert. Our class unfolds in segments, each spanning 10-15 minutes, with every yogi taking their turn to lead. Each individual possesses a unique profundity that imbues the room with a radiant energy that inspires. As I awaited my turn, I glanced around the room, struck by the remarkable men surrounding me. Three were newly acquainted, their introductions exuding an aura that instantly captured my attention. One regards me as a mentor, young enough to be my son. Two others have been constants in my life for nearly three decades. And then there’s the man I fondly call “the tree,” a figure whispered about in mutual circles for over a decade, whose recent collaboration with me brought immense joy. In that moment, I was in awe, elevated by the sheer magnificence of the company I kept. Taking a deep breath, I,...
