Back Yard Buddy

When my family moved to Greenwich CT in 1983, it was a culture shock to me. My entire life I had been called a white boy and now, for the first time, I wasn’t. In this new environment, I was vividly different. It wasn’t just the color of my skin. It was the core values that I was brought up with. In my opinion, I was raised to be tough outside of my home and submissive and obedient inside. I was trained to live a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde life. In Mount Vernon and the Bronx, NY, this lifestyle was accepted as normal because most of the kids I knew had similar expectations in and outside of their homes. Where I was coming from it was normal to see one of your friends get beaten in public. Greenwich was different, I mean REALLY different. For the first time in my life I saw kids talk back to their parents. They listened in school. However, they took their frustrations out on their parents. This was not true for everyone. Avoidence

Avoidance was the primary reason for my mediocre performance during my college and early adult years. I was a master of procrastination. I even avoided acknowledging uncomfortable truths about myself and missed countless opportunities for self-improvement. Take a moment to think about the things you currently avoid. Without even knowing you, I can predict that many of the things you avoid are precisely those that could catalyze your growth and enhance your life. Now, some of you, the fellow master avoiders reading this, might say things like, “I avoid my ex because they are toxic,” or “I avoid public places because of the violence.” To that, I can only say: you are not ready to become the best version of yourself because you are still finding excuses to avoid situations. PERIOD! In my experience, I avoided challenges that seemed daunting and confronting my fears. But facing your fears is the best way to live! One of my biggest fears during college was not being good enough to play basketball at the collegiate level. Everyone around me had immense confidence that I would excel in collegiate basketball. The Forgotten Art of Navigation

The global positioning system (GPS) has spoiled us. How many people today could navigate effectively using a map? I can and have navigated on many occasions using a map. This process taught me how to understand directions and the engineering of highways and roads. Roads are built in a system, and that system can help you find your way when lost. GPS is a great form of technology; however, it creates a dependency on it to navigate around your town, city, and state. What happens when you don’t have GPS and need to go somewhere? I recall one Sunday afternoon, cruising on my motorcycle to the beach. My usual route was detoured due to a closed bridge. What was supposed to be a 45-minute ride turned into a three-hour odyssey, leaving me 30 miles off course. I had GPS, but deep in the country, I had no signal. I was left to rely on my prior knowledge, which was limited because the detour took me far from familiar territory. It had been years since I traveled without some form of navigation system. MLK

This week marks the celebration of the birthday and federal holiday for Martin Luther King Jr., officially designated on November 2, 1983, when President Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law. Reflecting on my childhood, I remember eagerly anticipating this holiday for the simple joy of having a day off from school. However, as I matured, I delved deeper into understanding the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. through books and documentaries, gaining insights into the complexities surrounding this iconic figure. While acknowledging the greatness of MLK, I must admit that my personal hero is my grandfather, Harold Hauser. This doesn’t diminish MLK’s significance, but it prompts an interesting question: Who were Martin Luther King Jr.’s heroes? A key influence on him was Benjamin Mays, a mentor whose impact might not be widely known but played a pivotal role in shaping MLK’s ideals. Two aspects of MLK that I particularly admire are his unwavering bravery and his mission to unite people. Living under constant threat, he fearlessly led a movement aimed at breaking down racial barriers.
