We know what to do, We just don’t do it

In a world where information is at our fingertips and wisdom is more accessible than ever, why is it still so hard to do what we know we need to do? We have the tools, the knowledge, and the resources to succeed in our personal and professional lives, yet procrastination and complacency often get the better of us. It’s as if we’re caught in a loop of knowing but not doing, aware of what’s required to achieve our goals but choosing the path of least resistance instead. As a college student, a boyfriend, and a father, I’ve had my fair share of experiences where I knew exactly what needed to be done but failed to act. In college, assignments would pile up, and despite understanding that the only way to avoid stress was to start early, I often found myself cramming at the last minute. In relationships, I knew that open communication and active listening were key, yet I sometimes fell short, letting pride or distraction take over. As a father, I’ve understood the importance of being present and engaged, but there were times when work or fatigue made it easier to just go through the motions. Each of these,...

The Plastic Spoon!

I know all about being born with a plastic spoon. A plastic spoon might be found in the trash because it’s meant for one-time use only. Being born with a plastic spoon means one starts life at the bottom. One may have hard working parents who serve as good role models and provide what’s needed. However, when they pass away, they may not leave behind much except debt. Saying I was born with a plastic spoon isn’t a knock on my parents; it’s just the truth. I was born poor, with parents who were socially and economically uneducated. The likelihood of me graduating from college and earning a degree was extremely low. Yet, I earned a master’s degree and beyond, defining what hard work and determination are. My plastic spoon was fortunately handed to me in the 70s, before cell phones and computers became common items. I didn’t even realize I was poor or different until I moved to Greenwich, CT, from the Bronx in 5th grade. Being light-skinned in Mount Vernon and the Bronx, NY, led to me being called a ‘white boy.’ There was no such judgment when I moved to Greenwich; I was clearly black and clearly,...

The luck of the Irish ☘️ or NOT 3/17/1998

On Saint Patrick’s day of 1998, my first born son was born. At least that is what I THOUGHT. During labor, I was kicked out of the room because I was watching the Georgetown Hoyas Basketball game the night prior when my son’s mother began to have contractions. It was the NIT and they lost to Georgia Tech, I believe. I was given the gift of a healthy baby boy. I cried for two reasons: 1) I was a father 2) I was scared to death. I had started a full time job 3 months prior and was dealing with a paternity case at the same time, as If that was not enough. I was out of control mentally and, in my opinion, my son’s mother was not much better.  Before he was even born, the arguments were out of control and I was headed for a domestic case. That eventually happened and to be honest, I could and should have been arrested more times than I was. I was too weak to leave and had such a large ego that I couldn’t allow someone to disrespect me. I do not know how I survived this relationship without doing some,...

2024

As the new year unfolds, countless individuals find themselves inspired to make positive changes. Weight loss, quitting smoking or drinking, spending more time with family, and increasing income are among the common aspirations. Achieving these goals is entirely possible, yet a significant majority, around 80% or more, abandon their resolutions within the initial weeks of the year. Reflecting on my past New Year’s resolutions, I aimed to quit smoking on seven different occasions. Despite temporary successes, lasting up to three months each time, and two instances of abstaining for over a year within a span of 13 years, my final and successful quit happened on a random day in 2009. It’s worth noting that I had started making lifestyle changes well before completely overcoming the habit. Your actions shape who you become. Consistent effort leads to improvement. It’s crucial to emphasize that many individuals desire rewards without investing the necessary work. Excuses surface when expectations are unmet, and self-blame is avoided. Want a 6-figure career? Cultivate a 7-figure work ethic. Dreaming of a 7-figure home? Craft an 8-figure game plan. Dreaming alone won’t suffice; it’s essential to start living the dream by taking actionable steps. Embarking on this journey will,...

Strike

Do you bowl?  I do and it has been a blessing to start bowling again.  I bowled here and there with my mother when I was a child.  She was an avid bowler and bowled since I could remember.  When I was a young man, she gave me her bowling ball.  So, I used it every time I went bowling.  My mother and I have had a rocky relationship since I was a teenager.  I know she loved me and did the best she could with what she had.  However, I always expected and wanted more until I did my own reflecting.  Several years ago, I lost that bowling ball and not too long after it destroyed my mother and I’s relationship.  I did that often so I did not have to face my fears of being hurt again.   When I was writing my book, I called my mother crying and she was there for me like she always had been.  We think differently, we love differently, and still, I love the hell out of her.  I have realized through our relationship that the best love is the free love.  Not free in cost but free in the open sense. ,...
