When I was a kid the adults would use the phrase “monkey see monkey do”. On the surface I understood what they meant in saying this. I did not comprehend the importance of what I was seeing, listening to, and following. The phrase was often used when I followed a bad behavior or tried to do something that an adult did. I grew up around people who smoked. When I was a kid they used to sell gum that looked like cigarettes. I loved that gum because I could buy it, blow a cloud of smoke and get some candy out of it too. Thinking back, it was a brilliant marketing scheme for cigarette companies: make it cool to smoke. A product that kids can buy that makes them cool. When they become adults, they will be smoking or want to smoke. Monkey see monkey do. Reflecting on my life, I notice how the phrase monkey see monkey do has impacted me during various stages in multiple ways. Growth takes time!

I wasn’t always the man I am today. In fact, for a long time, I was the exact opposite of who I said I wanted to become. I was a college basketball player who quit—more than once. I was the student who rarely showed up to class. I was a man who ran toward lust and away from anything that looked like a real relationship. I had children in situations I shouldn’t have been in, continuing the broken family cycles I came from instead of breaking them. And despite knowing I was called for something greater, I ran from God—again and again—even when I saw progress, even when I felt that gentle tug on my heart. I’ve hit rock bottom so many times, I lost count. But one day, I made a promise. A simple one: I would never get arrested again. DUSTY!

I was raised around dogs my entire life. I also was afraid of all dogs except for the ones that lived in my home. This fear was justified by the many bad experiences that I had with a number of different dogs both big and small. I have been chased, bitten and had my food taken from my plate and even right out of my hand. Even though all these awful things happened to me as a child I still love dogs. To me, dogs are like people. They are all different! My first and favorite dog was Puggi. I would be lying if I told you I knew what type of dog he was. I believe he was a mutt. Puggi was my grandfather’s dog and he was super friendly and protective at the same time. We were living in Mount Vernon NY. I felt like there were dogs everywhere and I do not recall too many people walking their dogs with leashes. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “I fear I am integrating my people into a burning house.” This quote has echoed through my mind as I reflect on the realities of being an educated Black man in America. It is not simply a matter of success or personal achievement; it’s a dangerous journey that forces us to navigate a society designed to keep us in a state of submission. Education, for many, is seen as the great equalizer—a path to better opportunities and a chance to break free from the chains of poverty. However, for the educated Black man, it often feels more like a weapon used against us, revealing uncomfortable truths about our society and exposing the systemic structures that threaten our existence. Education gives us the power to see beyond the surface, to recognize the lies and manipulation perpetuated by the government. As an educated Black man, you begin to see through the glossy veneer of American politics, realizing that promises of freedom, equality, and opportunity are often hollow.
