The little loud ROCK 🪨

While in Vermont, my friend Alexx and I were driving up a gravel road toward our lodging.. The tranquility of the late afternoon view was abruptly interrupted when a high-pitched, agonizing screech emanated from our car. Almost instinctively, we knew something was wrong with the brakes. The car became increasingly annoying with the unsettling noise growing louder, we had no choice but to pull over and investigate. It was around 5 pm on a Friday evening, and the likelihood of finding a mechanic available at this hour was slim. We passed by a small auto repair shop that looked like it was closing for the day. Desperate, we decided to stop and ask for help. The shop’s employees, two white men who were clearly preparing to lock up, listened attentively as we explained our predicament. Despite the late hour and their apparent readiness to go home, these men did not hesitate. They could have easily turned us away, citing their closing time. Instead, they offered to take a look at our car. Their kindness and willingness to assist us were unexpected and helpful. The mechanics quickly got to work, first jacking up the car and then removing the tire to,...

The skin I am in!

I started writing poetry over 40 years ago. This is a poem I wrote in the late 1990’s. It was a song first. I revised it after reading the novel called “The skin I’m in” by Sharon G. Flake. This is a power spoken word piece! I do not know if it has the same depth if read with out proper tone, cadence and pitch??? Let me know! Born—The skin I am in My tone Far from ebony A throwback Red bone Green eyes Not a clone Completely separated From my home On my continent Impossible Sun blazing year round Too tropical Master raping Unstoppable So I am bronze Without the topical So I served in the house Not the field Cause my mother Had that sex appeal Married was my father, well my owner But for my mothers affection he didn’t yield So maybe I learned to read and write Generations later and my skin still can’t heal This Negro Whose hero Was changed and rearranged To deceive slaves And Blacks Like Greek myths His Story Is not the Real story Just oppression Great depression White Jesus Slave’s masters obsession Melting in the pot So hot Mixing can’t stop,...

Struggle

I owe 100% of my success to the struggle. Stop and think about everything you have. How did you achieve it? Was it easy? In my case nothing I have came instant or without suffering in some manners. Many of my nightmares I truly lived. Were the experiences fun? HELL to the NO. However, they built everything I am standing on today. Everytime I hit a wall, which is often, I look at the obstacles I have overcome thus far and without hesitation I continue to move forward and up. Remember forward and up requires work. Going down hill is easy. Gravity will assist you. Add some wheels and you will be at the bottom quick!      I was listening to an Ed Mylet Podcast the other day and his guess was Tony Robbins. He said something that hit me like a migraine on a court day. He referred to the economic times we are currently going through as the winter. He went on to talk about how people ski, snowboard and ice skate in the winter while others just stay in, afraid and live in fear. I was like damn! That was me. I never,...

Cell phones and the Internet

The internet and cell phones are impacting relationships significantly. When I was growing up, five of us shared one house phone. I knew everyone who called for my sisters, mother, and stepdad. There was no expectation to return a call within a specific time frame. If I wanted to talk to a girl, I had to call her home and ask her parents for permission. This often involved the inevitable question, “who is this?” If I had a less-than-stellar reputation, her parents would either bar me from speaking to their child or interrogate her to ensure our relationship was platonic. This process instilled in me a deep respect for both adults and peers. Building relationships during that era was challenging without parents being aware. Many friends, both boys and girls, were only conversational companions during school hours. However, it was rare to encounter them outside of the school setting. The kids I associated with were known to their parents, and even today, those parents inquire about me, demonstrating the lasting impact of that indirect monitoring through the house phone. This system helped keep children in check, discouraging negative influences and fostering a sense of respect. For young people who have,...

DUSTY!

I was raised around dogs my entire life. I also was afraid of all dogs except for the ones that lived in my home. This fear was justified by the many bad experiences that I had with a number of different dogs both big and small. I have been chased, bitten and had my food taken from my plate and even right out of my hand. Even though all these awful things happened to me as a child I still love dogs. To me, dogs are like people. They are all different! My first and favorite dog was Puggi. I would be lying if I told you I knew what type of dog he was. I believe he was a mutt. Puggi was my grandfather’s dog and he was super friendly and protective at the same time. We were living in Mount Vernon NY. I felt like there were dogs everywhere and I do not recall too many people walking their dogs with leashes. Most dogs were tied up in the backyard on a long leash, fenced in the yard, or just left loose to roam the neighborhood. The first kind of dog I had a fear of were German,...
