Who do you blame? We live in a world, especially in the USA, where we depend so much on others. We depend on electricity, running water, grocery stores, and hundreds of other dependent variables that have been created over time. We are so dependent on these elements of life that we think we cannot survive without them. A few years ago, one of my student’s parents told me that her child needed to bring his phone to school because it was the only way she could contact him if she needed him. I was speechless. She was correct in her mind about needing to contact her son. The school does have a phone system, and if her child was supposed to be in school and she needed to contact him, she could call the school. However, technology has created a more convenient system, and society has forgotten how to function without it. I graduated from high school and college without a cell phone. Life’s road map!

If you’re under 35, chances are you’ve never had to unfold a map to chart your course on a road trip or relied on verbal directions from a friend. Instead, you’ve likely been fortunate enough to have GPS at your fingertips. But does this modern convenience truly make our journeys easier, or does it rob us of the valuable lessons learned through getting lost? I remember the days of navigating across states armed only with a map and sheer determination. Yes, I got lost countless times, like that memorable trip with my friend Mike back in the early ’90s. We ended up heading in the wrong direction for hours before a kind stranger set us straight. What should have been a six-hour journey turned into a 12-hour odyssey, but looking back, it’s an experience that bonded us for life. Reflecting on my life’s journey, I see parallels with the roads I’ve traveled. Each trip, whether literal or metaphorical, has taught me valuable lessons along the way. Just as my grandfather guided me through those early driving lessons, so too do parents try to steer their children through life’s twists and turns, knowing full well that they can’t control every outcome.,...

Your character is naked!

As I argued with my best man (Brandon, my oldest son), I was reminded of this Ed Mylet podcast I was listening to in which he was interviewing Eric Thomas ( ET the hip hop preacher). They were talking about “what you have will never change who you are.” ET mentioned a quote that went something like “ look in the mirror, not the window”. I do not recall who it was from or if that is the exact quote. What I do know is that I lost about 5 minutes of the podcast content while I was in deep thought. It dawned on me that “Character is Naked”. We could all agree or disagree that nothing changes if we don’t change. Meaning that some may say, if a person is unhappy now in their current relationship with their spouse, they will be unhappy in their next relationship. Others may say they will be happy in their next relationship because they were unhappy with the person they were in a relationship with.. Do people make you happy? Leaders going bad!

It only takes one person to make a real stand and bring about change within a system. It has been more than 50 years since teachers went on strike and refused to work. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, many teachers started leaving their jobs and careers in search of better opportunities. The pandemic has further accelerated this trend. What is the problem? There are numerous problems, as is the case everywhere and at all times. However, many of these problems can actually be seen as opportunities. Schools and their staff have the potential to create amazing learning environments. Will this happen? Yes, in some schools, but in most cases, no. I have been a teacher for 22 years and have had eight different leaders. Out of these eight, two were truly exceptional at their jobs and effectively utilized their staff. One of them was not only competent but also a good person, while the other was quite challenging to work with. The latter managed 33 staff members for only 37 students, displaying rudeness and a lack of empathy towards others.
