HAM AVE

About a decade ago while visiting my older sister in Greenwich Ct, I took her daughter to the basketball court that I grew up playing at. In my opinion from 1989-1993 that was my court. I did not own the court, however I was the baller that you had to earn respect from. The court and area was so different. It was much nicer. It had nice clear backboards and break away rims. It also had two hoops and not four like the Ham ave court I grew up playing on. It was nice to shoot on the new court however I could not keep the visions of the old court and moments that took place there. I mean from games such as butts up, stick ball, kickball, basketball, football, and tag to the after school fights. Not to mention riding bikes down the steps and skateboarding. Ham ave was my home away from home. It was not only the place where I went to elementary school, it was the place where I groomed my basketball game and the place where I met my older son’s mother. When I was in fifth grade Ham ave was the all in one,...

Marriage Retreat

In celebration of my wife and I’s one-year anniversary, we met an inspiring couple from Chicago who were on their 38th anniversary. Sharing dinner and conversation during our vacations, we quickly formed a connection that extended beyond that trip. They later invited us to join them at a BNNA marriage retreat, and without hesitation, we accepted the opportunity. It turned out to be one of the most enriching experiences of our first year as a married couple. Along with nine other couples, we immersed ourselves in a retreat designed to strengthen and reflect on our marriages, and I even had the privilege of teaching a 45-minute workout session during the retreat. This experience reminded me of three powerful lessons I want to share in this week’s blog. First, the value of associating with people who share similar values and a desire to improve their marriage cannot be overstated. Surrounding ourselves with couples who were equally committed to growth made us realize that we weren’t alone in navigating the complexities of marriage. We all face challenges, whether it’s communication, managing expectations, or dealing with life’s everyday pressures. But when you connect with people on the same journey, you realize not only,...

Your character is naked!

As I argued with my best man (Brandon, my oldest son), I was reminded of this Ed Mylet podcast I was listening to in which he was interviewing Eric Thomas ( ET the hip hop preacher). They were talking about “what you have will never change who you are.” ET mentioned a quote that went something like “ look in the mirror, not the window”. I do not recall who it was from or if that is the exact quote. What I do know is that I lost about 5 minutes of the podcast content while I was in deep thought. It dawned on me that “Character is Naked”. We could all agree or disagree that nothing changes if we don’t change. Meaning that some may say, if a person is unhappy now in their current relationship with their spouse, they will be unhappy in their next relationship. Others may say they will be happy in their next relationship because they were unhappy with the person they were in a relationship with.. Do people make you happy? ORRRRR do people add to your happiness? I hate to bust your bubble! People do not make people happy. Happiness comes from the,...

Opportunities in the air!

While taking a flight to Daytona beach Florida for a weekend getaway with two of my guy friends, I closely paid attention to people’s habits around me. As I walked through 1st class, I noticed a man frantic on his lap top. I thought to myself, “I hope he works for himself”. I would never be that intense about performing tasks for a company or boss. Then I noticed an older couple relaxed and reading the paper. I could not see what the older gentleman was reading, but I assumed it was something business related. As I made my way to the main cabin, I saw people wiping down their seats and adjusting their masks. I chuckled to myself. After I sat down, I began to watch to see what people would be doing during this flight. I have been on over 100 flights in my lifetime and this was the first time I really watched people! My observations lead me to believe that people want to be entertained, work, sleep and eat/drink while flying. This is not much different than the real world. The people who I noticed reading were reading mystery novels, love novels and enjoyment type books.,...

Growing old with Hip Hop

I wrote this piece back in 2013, and in light of hip hop’s 50th anniversary celebration this weekend, I believe this poem resonates fittingly. Enjoy!
