For those who’ve been following my journey, reading my blogs, sharing my words, reflecting with me—I want to say thank you. Your presence matters. Your support matters. But lately, I know you’ve noticed: I haven’t been blogging every week like I used to. That’s not because I stopped growing, or because I’ve run out of things to say. Quite the opposite. I’ve been doing deep work. I’ve been working on myself—the man I am and the man I’m becoming. Spiritually. Emotionally. Physically. I’ve been facing the mirror not just to look, but to see. Wooden Spoon

The humble wooden spoon, a utensil often underestimated yet possessing remarkable longevity if cared for properly. I’ve used the same wooden spoon in my kitchen for over five years, a testament to its resilience in a sea of discarded and broken counterparts. But beyond its culinary utility, the wooden spoon serves as a metaphor for the trajectory of wealth and mindset. In the hierarchy of spoons, the wooden spoon signifies a transition—a precarious balance between the single-use plastic spoon and the royal silver one. It symbolizes the legacy we leave behind, whether it be tangible assets like homes and businesses or intangible wealth such as wisdom and values. While some are born into privilege, wielding silver spoons from the start, many begin with humble beginnings, clutching plastic spoons that signify struggle and scarcity. Preparation is a must!

Preparation lays the foundation for success. As a former basketball coach, I dedicated countless hours to preparing for each game. This involved various tasks such as scouting the opposing team, analyzing game footage, and conducting daily practices with my team. We always felt ready to face teams that were equal to or better than us, but we often found ourselves unprepared against less skilled opponents. As I grew in my coaching journey, I came to realize that sometimes, prioritizing the team’s well-being necessitates sacrificing the potential for a resounding victory. Early in my coaching career, my sole focus was on winning and winning by a wide margin. If we were significantly superior to an opposing team, I wanted to outscore them by a significant margin. However, a pivotal moment occurred that altered my coaching philosophy. Interestingly, it wasn’t related to basketball at all. A concerned parent approached me seeking guidance regarding her son. She explained that her son consistently arrived late to school unless she personally woke him up and supervised his morning routine. The little loud ROCK 🪨

While in Vermont, my friend Alexx and I were driving up a gravel road toward our lodging.. The tranquility of the late afternoon view was abruptly interrupted when a high-pitched, agonizing screech emanated from our car. Almost instinctively, we knew something was wrong with the brakes. The car became increasingly annoying with the unsettling noise growing louder, we had no choice but to pull over and investigate. It was around 5 pm on a Friday evening, and the likelihood of finding a mechanic available at this hour was slim. We passed by a small auto repair shop that looked like it was closing for the day. Desperate, we decided to stop and ask for help. The shop’s employees, two white men who were clearly preparing to lock up, listened attentively as we explained our predicament. Despite the late hour and their apparent readiness to go home, these men did not hesitate. They could have easily turned us away, citing their closing time. Instead, they offered to take a look at our car. Their kindness and willingness to assist us were unexpected and helpful. Election Day!

As I pulled up to the polls at Kenney Elementary School in Manchester, Connecticut, I couldn’t help but reflect on the first time I ever voted back in 1992. I was young, born a Democrat, casting my vote for Bill Clinton without much thought. Back then, voting felt straightforward, a quick alignment with what I’d always known. But this time, over 32 years later, I felt something entirely different. I felt the weight of responsibility, yes, but also a deep questioning of the act itself—a reflection on whether voting, as it stands, truly aligns with my values. Time has taught me more about life, about this country, and about the principles that should ground our society. My experiences as a Black man, an independent thinker, and a father have reshaped how I see my place here and the responsibility I bear. Today, when I vote, I don’t do it out of habit but from a conscious sense of duty. Yet I can’t help but wonder if casting my vote is, in part, an acceptance of a system that no longer if ever seems to serve us all.
