When I was a 21-year-old college student at Eastern Connecticut State University, I wrote a paper on affirmative action. The assignment required us to choose a civil matter and argue both for and against its necessity. As a black student, I chose to wholeheartedly support affirmative action. At that time, I wasn’t particularly academically inclined or focused on setting goals in life. Instead, I was enjoying the social aspects and party atmosphere of college. Needless to say, this topic held emotional significance for me, which motivated me to put forth a tremendous effort. I presented compelling data that made my paper highly persuasive, and I was thrilled to receive an A-, which was a significant achievement for me at the time. During class discussions, some of my classmates, who happened to be white males, voiced their disagreement with my paper. In my younger years, I automatically assumed that their dissenting opinions stemmed from racism. Fast forward 29 years to June 29th, 2023, when the Supreme Court announced that colleges are no longer required to consider race as a factor in the admissions process. The little loud ROCK 🪨

While in Vermont, my friend Alexx and I were driving up a gravel road toward our lodging.. The tranquility of the late afternoon view was abruptly interrupted when a high-pitched, agonizing screech emanated from our car. Almost instinctively, we knew something was wrong with the brakes. The car became increasingly annoying with the unsettling noise growing louder, we had no choice but to pull over and investigate. It was around 5 pm on a Friday evening, and the likelihood of finding a mechanic available at this hour was slim. We passed by a small auto repair shop that looked like it was closing for the day. Desperate, we decided to stop and ask for help. The shop’s employees, two white men who were clearly preparing to lock up, listened attentively as we explained our predicament. Despite the late hour and their apparent readiness to go home, these men did not hesitate. They could have easily turned us away, citing their closing time. Instead, they offered to take a look at our car. Their kindness and willingness to assist us were unexpected and helpful. Shame on us!

As a child, I often questioned the necessity of mundane tasks like brushing my teeth, attending school, and adhering to rules. They seemed like mere control tactics, albeit necessary ones. However, as I’ve grown, I’ve come to appreciate these seemingly trivial chores for what they truly are: character and discipline builders. I shudder to think what state my teeth would be in had I neglected daily brushing. The habit, ingrained in me since childhood, is now second nature. Looking back, my poor dietary habits as a youth resulted in multiple cavities, highlighting the importance of daily oral hygiene. Now, as a teacher, I grasp the significance of education in shaping a productive society. While I advocate for improvements in the public school system, I firmly believe in the transformative power of education. Despite holding three degrees, I reflect on my own educational journey with a tinge of regret. Rushing into college straight after high school, I lacked direction and squandered my undergraduate years in a haze of parties. Even during a year-long hiatus working, clarity eluded me. Struggle

I owe 100% of my success to the struggle. Stop and think about everything you have. How did you achieve it? Was it easy? In my case nothing I have came instant or without suffering in some manners. Many of my nightmares I truly lived. Were the experiences fun? HELL to the NO. However, they built everything I am standing on today. Everytime I hit a wall, which is often, I look at the obstacles I have overcome thus far and without hesitation I continue to move forward and up. Remember forward and up requires work. Going down hill is easy. Gravity will assist you. Add some wheels and you will be at the bottom quick! I was listening to an Ed Mylet Podcast the other day and his guess was Tony Robbins. He said something that hit me like a migraine on a court day. He referred to the economic times we are currently going through as the winter. DUSTY!

I was raised around dogs my entire life. I also was afraid of all dogs except for the ones that lived in my home. This fear was justified by the many bad experiences that I had with a number of different dogs both big and small. I have been chased, bitten and had my food taken from my plate and even right out of my hand. Even though all these awful things happened to me as a child I still love dogs. To me, dogs are like people. They are all different! My first and favorite dog was Puggi. I would be lying if I told you I knew what type of dog he was. I believe he was a mutt. Puggi was my grandfather’s dog and he was super friendly and protective at the same time. We were living in Mount Vernon NY. I felt like there were dogs everywhere and I do not recall too many people walking their dogs with leashes.
