Promise- introduction

This book emerges from the depths of a broken man’s soul. While I am still a “WORK IN PROGRESS,” each year finds me better than the last—a repeating cycle for well over a decade. Life broke me down, and I failed to recognize the cracks that could have been my escape, leaving me trapped in a cycle of excuses and blame. This destructive process became easy, though its outcomes were harsh. I wished for change rather than working for it. As a middle-aged man, I finally became self-aware of my position in life and the true reasons for it. The realization hit hard: it was all ME, ME, ME! I made a solemn PROMISE to myself—one that would change my life. This promise started with taking better care of myself. It began with a simple act: moving my body daily, first thing in the morning. This one small task transformed my world in countless ways. Now, over a decade later, I am ready to share my story with the world, believing that my journey can help others change their lives too. Although I am not done, I feel as though I have just begun. This book is a testament to,...

Men’s deserve to heal

It was a cold, rainy Saturday morning, and my schedule was already stacked. But I agreed to squeeze in a men’s group session—not because I had the time, but because my brother Kevin wanted to be there. Sometimes that’s all the motivation you need: a brother asking you to show up. And when a man asks you to stand beside him in his healing, you don’t think twice—you show up. I figured I’d walk in 30 minutes late and slide quietly into a seat while the session was in full swing. But to my surprise, the session hadn’t even started. The brothers were just sitting around, talking, laughing, vibing. It wasn’t formal, but the energy in the room was sacred. I walked in, shook every hand in the circle. Kevin, Keith—men I’d met before on a previous retreat—were already posted. Each handshake I exchanged carried this silent power… it wasn’t just grip and release. It was firm. Gentle. Restorative. Each one felt like, “I see you, bro. And I’m glad you made it.” The purpose of the gathering was simple: Men. Healing. Together. That’s it. No performance. No pretending. Just honesty and the presence of God. God was there. I,...

Election Day!

As I pulled up to the polls at Kenney Elementary School in Manchester, Connecticut, I couldn’t help but reflect on the first time I ever voted back in 1992. I was young, born a Democrat, casting my vote for Bill Clinton without much thought. Back then, voting felt straightforward, a quick alignment with what I’d always known. But this time, over 32 years later, I felt something entirely different. I felt the weight of responsibility, yes, but also a deep questioning of the act itself—a reflection on whether voting, as it stands, truly aligns with my values. Time has taught me more about life, about this country, and about the principles that should ground our society. My experiences as a Black man, an independent thinker, and a father have reshaped how I see my place here and the responsibility I bear. Today, when I vote, I don’t do it out of habit but from a conscious sense of duty. Yet I can’t help but wonder if casting my vote is, in part, an acceptance of a system that no longer if ever seems to serve us all. It has never served people who look like me in my humble opinion.,...

Prime Time

Winners always stand out, and we gravitate towards them for a myriad of personal reasons. It’s exhilarating when our favorites emerge victorious, but what happens when someone we don’t particularly like succeeds? Do our personal biases matter if victory was earned fairly? There are numerous athletes I may not have liked, but I’ve learned to respect not just their skills, but who they are as individuals. Winning is no cakewalk; greatness is a Herculean task, and becoming the best or the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) borders on the impossible. The journey to the top lacks balance; it’s fueled by obsession, unwavering determination, and a mix of healthy and unhealthy energies. It’s that relentless drive that dismisses words like “can’t” and “NO!” Tim Grover aptly calls it the “dark side” in his book “Relentless”. This is the aspect of greatness that some might find unlikable, but it’s also what propels these individuals toward becoming the best or at least incredibly close to it. I can vividly recall prime time moments, listening to Dan Patrick, Brent Musburger, and Stuart Scott on ESPN Sports Center, fervently highlighting Deion Sanders’ plays. From his high-stepping dances in the endzone to his lockdown defensive skills,...

MLK

This week marks the celebration of the birthday and federal holiday for Martin Luther King Jr., officially designated on November 2, 1983, when President Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law. Reflecting on my childhood, I remember eagerly anticipating this holiday for the simple joy of having a day off from school. However, as I matured, I delved deeper into understanding the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. through books and documentaries, gaining insights into the complexities surrounding this iconic figure. While acknowledging the greatness of MLK, I must admit that my personal hero is my grandfather, Harold Hauser. This doesn’t diminish MLK’s significance, but it prompts an interesting question: Who were Martin Luther King Jr.’s heroes? A key influence on him was Benjamin Mays, a mentor whose impact might not be widely known but played a pivotal role in shaping MLK’s ideals. Two aspects of MLK that I particularly admire are his unwavering bravery and his mission to unite people. Living under constant threat, he fearlessly led a movement aimed at breaking down racial barriers. Reflecting on his life, I believe MLK’s success lay in his commitment to uniting the nation across racial lines. Racism is learned, not inherent.,...
