This weekend, I had the honor of attending my niece’s graduation from Coastal Carolina University. As I sat among the sea of caps and gowns, witnessing the hopeful faces of tomorrow, I couldn’t help but reminisce about my own college graduation back in the halcyon days of 1997. Graduation day had stirred within me a whirlwind of emotions; I was filled with a mix of excitement and trepidation as I faced the looming prospect of adulthood. Reflecting on my collegiate journey, I realized that I hadn’t been the quintessential college student. With a modest GPA of 2.2, I often wondered how I managed to cross the finish line. Yet, here I was, a testament to the 30% of individuals who had earned a college degree. Surveying the room, I pondered how many of my fellow graduates shared a similar path. As the ceremony unfolded, I couldn’t shake the feeling of empathy for these fresh-faced graduates. For many of them, college had been a sanctuary—a bubble shielding them from the harsh realities of the world beyond campus gates. Wedding Day!

Today marks the moment when we officially unite as one, a significant milestone in our lives. This journey has been filled with meticulous planning and heartfelt sacrifices to reach this point. Many people consider their wedding day to be the pinnacle of happiness, calling it the best day of their life—a profound declaration indeed. It represents a single day amidst a lifetime, comprising countless days—your age multiplied by 365. To consider this one day as the absolute best is a weighty statement, isn’t it? But I hold a different perspective. While this day holds immense significance, I don’t want it to be the peak of our marriage. If it were, I’d see it as a failure. Instead, I envision our wedding day as a graduation, where it serves as the beginning of an extraordinary journey. What truly matters lies beyond the ceremony, in what we make of our lives together. A diploma has little value if we fail to apply the knowledge and skills we’ve acquired. Similarly, I want our marriage to flourish each day, growing stronger over time. The Plastic Spoon!

I know all about being born with a plastic spoon. A plastic spoon might be found in the trash because it’s meant for one-time use only. Being born with a plastic spoon means one starts life at the bottom. One may have hard working parents who serve as good role models and provide what’s needed. However, when they pass away, they may not leave behind much except debt. Saying I was born with a plastic spoon isn’t a knock on my parents; it’s just the truth. I was born poor, with parents who were socially and economically uneducated. The likelihood of me graduating from college and earning a degree was extremely low. Yet, I earned a master’s degree and beyond, defining what hard work and determination are. My plastic spoon was fortunately handed to me in the 70s, before cell phones and computers became common items. I didn’t even realize I was poor or different until I moved to Greenwich, CT, from the Bronx in 5th grade. Being light-skinned in Mount Vernon and the Bronx, NY, led to me being called a ‘white boy.’ There was no such judgment when I moved to Greenwich; I was clearly black and clearly,...

Public Schools

I have been a teacher for over 22 years. I have dedicated 18 of those years to public education. My advice to any parent approaching school age would be to consider homeschooling or enrolling your child in a private school. My teaching journey began during the era of the “No Child Left Behind” (NCLB) initiative, which aimed to prioritize the academic achievement of traditionally under-served groups of children, including low-income students, students with disabilities, and students from various racial and ethnic backgrounds. In theory, this initiative seemed commendable, but in practice, it has unfortunately left many students behind. In the past, if students didn’t meet the general requirements, they often had to repeat a grade. I recall this from my own school days in the 1980s, where some friends repeated grades due to a lack of effort or a slower learning pace, and yet, they lead successful lives today. Notably, these friends were of diverse backgrounds. Back then, there was a clear standard that students had to meet to progress, and if they didn’t, they either attended summer school or repeated the grade. This standard was upheld. FORKS

We all have heard the expression by Yogi Berra “when you come to a fork in the road, take it”. Have you ever thought about the number of forks that you have come to in your life? I spent countless hours reliving my past. Wishing I made a different decision.These hours accumulated into days, months and even years. Thinking about what I could have done differently led me into a deep unconscious depression. I was living in the present physically while my mind and soul were in the past. Now I do not live in the past, nor doI live in the future. I live in the moment. I am finally finding peace. Since birth we are faced with hundreds if not thousands of forks a day. Forks referring to choices or decisions. What I wear, what I eat are small forks. Bigger forks would include, should be friends with this person or that person. What I’m doing this weekend. To the gigantic decisions: should I marry him or her, what college should I go to, where do I want to live. These are all forks that we deal with every day.
