Leaders going bad!

It only takes one person to make a real stand and bring about change within a system. It has been more than 50 years since teachers went on strike and refused to work. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, many teachers started leaving their jobs and careers in search of better opportunities. The pandemic has further accelerated this trend. What is the problem? There are numerous problems, as is the case everywhere and at all times. However, many of these problems can actually be seen as opportunities. Schools and their staff have the potential to create amazing learning environments. Will this happen? Yes, in some schools, but in most cases, no. I have been a teacher for 22 years and have had eight different leaders. Out of these eight, two were truly exceptional at their jobs and effectively utilized their staff. One of them was not only competent but also a good person, while the other was quite challenging to work with. The latter managed 33 staff members for only 37 students, displaying rudeness and a lack of empathy towards others. Eventually, this negative impression led to a situation where he needed the support of his staff, but they all turned,...

Men healing – Round 2

After last year’s unforgettable experience in Vermont for the first-ever Men’s Health Retreat, I knew this second gathering would be something special. But what I didn’t anticipate was how much deeper it would take root in my soil and fertilize my curious seed, not only as an attendee, but this time, as a facilitator of a workshop. This year, I didn’t just come to participate. I came to pour in — leading a workshop and offering restorative healing Manhood Yoga to a room full of powerful men of color. These weren’t just strangers. These were familiar faces and new souls alike, brothers who greet with hugs, dap, and that shared understanding. That kind of quiet knowing that only comes when you’ve been through some things and grown because of it. The energy hits different when you walk into a space and see men you’re proud to stand beside. As I scanned the room, I smiled, because some of these incredible men will soon be guests on my podcast, Shades of a Man. That’s legacy in motion. That’s what happens when iron sharpens iron. One of the moments that filled me the most was reconnecting with Malik Champlain a leader and,...

Family growth

When do we lose the inhibition to question everything we do not know or understand? As a young boy, I recall bombarding my grandfather with hundreds of questions. He patiently answered many, while some remained mysteries. Yet, I trusted his opinion because he took the time to respond thoughtfully and honestly. Even though he might have told me a few white lies, like the existence of Santa Claus, my trust stemmed from his consistent effort to engage with my queries. I vividly remember a moment when I questioned my grandfather about my parents’ separation over the phone. Instead of giving a direct answer, he shared a story. At that tender age of about 10, I probably already knew the answer, but I wasn’t ready to accept it. His closing words, “You are blessed to know and have had your father, mother, and three of your grandparents in your life,” didn’t sit well with me at the time. I was longing for my father’s presence, oblivious to the bigger picture. Now, 41 years later, I reflect on that moment with gratitude. Despite my father’s illness and our strained relationship, I acknowledge the lessons I’ve learned, even if they weren’t always positive.,...

Promise- introduction

This book emerges from the depths of a broken man’s soul. While I am still a “WORK IN PROGRESS,” each year finds me better than the last—a repeating cycle for well over a decade. Life broke me down, and I failed to recognize the cracks that could have been my escape, leaving me trapped in a cycle of excuses and blame. This destructive process became easy, though its outcomes were harsh. I wished for change rather than working for it. As a middle-aged man, I finally became self-aware of my position in life and the true reasons for it. The realization hit hard: it was all ME, ME, ME! I made a solemn PROMISE to myself—one that would change my life. This promise started with taking better care of myself. It began with a simple act: moving my body daily, first thing in the morning. This one small task transformed my world in countless ways. Now, over a decade later, I am ready to share my story with the world, believing that my journey can help others change their lives too. Although I am not done, I feel as though I have just begun. This book is a testament to,...
