This week marks the celebration of the birthday and federal holiday for Martin Luther King Jr., officially designated on November 2, 1983, when President Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law. Reflecting on my childhood, I remember eagerly anticipating this holiday for the simple joy of having a day off from school. However, as I matured, I delved deeper into understanding the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. through books and documentaries, gaining insights into the complexities surrounding this iconic figure. While acknowledging the greatness of MLK, I must admit that my personal hero is my grandfather, Harold Hauser. This doesn’t diminish MLK’s significance, but it prompts an interesting question: Who were Martin Luther King Jr.’s heroes? A key influence on him was Benjamin Mays, a mentor whose impact might not be widely known but played a pivotal role in shaping MLK’s ideals. Two aspects of MLK that I particularly admire are his unwavering bravery and his mission to unite people. Living under constant threat, he fearlessly led a movement aimed at breaking down racial barriers. NO Child left behind!!

A few weeks ago, I had the honor of speaking as part of Professor Booker’s keynote presentation at an educational conference at Wesleyan College in Middletown, Connecticut. My focus was on social promotion, a practice that, in my experience, does more harm than good. Social promotion is nothing more than a system’s way of labeling students and pushing them forward without ensuring they meet academic standards. When I was in school, if a minority student didn’t do well on standardized tests, the common justification was that the test was culturally biased. While I agreed with this idea to an extent, I also understood that culture is not simply what we are born into—it is what we are exposed to, taught, and immersed in. If someone is raised within a society, they will inevitably learn that culture. Instead of adjusting how we assess students and ensuring that all students have access to meaningful, relevant learning, the system moved in the opposite direction. Over time, standardized testing has lost its role in education, and students are now being moved forward without ever proving they understand the material. The impact of this is clear. Silver Spoon!

In the realm of societal unbalance, there exists a phrase that reverberates with both envy and disdain: “born with a silver spoon.” It explains the notion of being born into immense wealth, shielded from the adversities that plague the majority of humanity. As I reflect on this concept, I am reminded of the stark realities of economic inequality that persist in our world. In my capacity as a black teacher and gym owner, I witness firsthand the disparities that exist and the systemic barriers that obstruct the path to prosperity for many including myself. Less than 2% of the population will never have to worry about money. These individuals were born with a silver spoon. This status is for life. Unlike a plastic spoon, a person born with a silver spoon will always have a silver spoon. It doesn’t matter what happens in their life; they will always be rich. The metaphor of the silver spoon speaks to the perpetuation of privilege across generations. It symbolizes not just material wealth, but also access to opportunities, networks, and resources that reinforce and amplify that wealth. For those born into affluent families, success often seems preordained, a birthright rather than an achievement.,...

Family growth

When do we lose the inhibition to question everything we do not know or understand? As a young boy, I recall bombarding my grandfather with hundreds of questions. He patiently answered many, while some remained mysteries. Yet, I trusted his opinion because he took the time to respond thoughtfully and honestly. Even though he might have told me a few white lies, like the existence of Santa Claus, my trust stemmed from his consistent effort to engage with my queries. I vividly remember a moment when I questioned my grandfather about my parents’ separation over the phone. Instead of giving a direct answer, he shared a story. At that tender age of about 10, I probably already knew the answer, but I wasn’t ready to accept it. His closing words, “You are blessed to know and have had your father, mother, and three of your grandparents in your life,” didn’t sit well with me at the time. I was longing for my father’s presence, oblivious to the bigger picture. Now, 41 years later, I reflect on that moment with gratitude.
